UCC '17 Ibrahim Surgery Fund

Donation protected

Volunteering with the Swedish Qandil organization, a partner organization with the UNHCR at the Khazir M1 refugee camp - home to over 35000 individuals, I witnessed the unfortunate situations of thousands in the area. What struck me the most was a young boy named Ibrahim Mahmoud Ahmed. He is a 6-year-old boy who was born with omphalocele which is a rare abdominal defect where the organs remain outside of the abdomen in a sac. This has caused him other issues including intestinal obstruction, hydronephrosis, and hepatomegaly. He stays at the camp with his mother, little sister, and older step-sister. His father was killed by ISIS, and his sister also suffers from a gluteal abscess.

Ibrahim is in need of a life-saving surgery which no organization can cover the cost of. As his situation got worse, Ibrahim and his mother were given a temporary leave from the camp. I visited their temporary home and spoke to them both. There is a doctor, Dr. Fawzi, here in Iraq willing to give the surgery for free at the Hawler Private Hospital, but the cost to the hospital will be $5250 CAD. The doctor has set January 25th as a checkup date, and 27th as the operation date. Ibrahim will not be allowed into the hospital until the money has been paid in full.

The Upper Canada College Class of 2017 has made the decision to lead this fundraiser and help save this boy’s life. Throughout our time at UCC, we have heard of the harsh realities that exist in other countries and we would like nothing more than to help Ibrahim, his family, and the people at the camp. Ibrahim has already been through so much, and if the surgery happens, his family will still be living at the camp. This surgery will give a new lease on life to this entire family. If the fundraising goal is met, any excess money will go towards getting the sister treated for her gluteal abscess and to the refugee camp of 35,000.

With a connection to the doctor, and the UNHCR partner organization, Qandil, absolutely everything will be documented - from the doctor's notes to the hospital receipts. The money will be withdrawn by myself and paid directly to the Qandil organization and they will direct the first $5250 directly to Ibrahim's operation. Tax receipts will be available upon request for all donations.

100% of the remaining proceeds will be going to treat Ibrahim's sister, and to the Khazir M1 camp which will help cover the costs of legal documentation (most in the camp have legal documents issued by ISIS), medical assistance, and pillows and blankets.

Thank you so much for the support.
