Hi, my name is Tom Rude. For the past four years, I have been fighting Colon Cancer. I was first diagnosed with stage 3 Colon Cancer in 2010, unfortunately, I received a terminal diagnosis in June of 2012. Since 2010, I have had surgery and 3 rounds of chemotherapy. My first round of therapy left me with neuropathy in my legs and hands. As a result, I had to take six weeks of Physical Therapy just to learn to walk again. Although I have had 3 rounds of treatment, they have proving to be ineffective.
Right now, I am feeling strong even though the cancer is spread throughout my abdominal wall. However, I have a tumor resting on my liver and one next to my left lung that will eventually invade those areas. I am fighting hard to keep that from happening by juicing every day, eating right and running 3 days a week.
I am a licensed school teacher and I have been working in the school system in some form or fashion whether it be a classroom teacher, a kindergarten assistant or a remediation aide since 2001. It broke my heart when I had to give up my job at the end of the 2012 school year. Fortunately, I have been able to continue by volunteering in a first grade classroom. The teacher is exceptional and the students are fantastic! Going there is always the highlight of my week. It helps me to keep positive, which is so important when facing such a devastating disease.
Since I was a kid, I have always had a fascination with England and I have always wanted to go visit. My wife, Pam, and I had planned to go there when we retired as our dream vacation, but that dream needs to come true now.
