Titjikala Wildlife Sanctuary

Titjikila is a tight-knit traditional aboriginal community with a population of approximately 300 people and located 130km south of Alice Springs (also known as Tapatjatjaka and formerly known as "Maryvale", after the cattle station at the community of the same name). 

Traditional owner Margaret Campbell and bush daughter Lorelle Stoeckel are seeking funding to kickstart the establishment of a Not-for-Profit wildlife sanctuary. Margaret Campbell is the Director and Secretary of Ritjingka Aboriginal Corporation that will oversee the distribution of funding and the establishment of the sanctuary. 


Wildlife carer Lorrelle has been caring for injured, sick and orphaned wildlife for the last 5+ years and has limited capacity and capability to care for additional wildlife from her home. Currently, Lorrelle supports the care of wildlife through her own personal funding and due to lack of space and no funding, there is a need to establish a Not-for-Profit Wildlife Sanctuary. 





DREAM OF TITJIKALA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY 

Currently, local schools visit the community for yearly school camps, and the establishment of the wildlife sanctuary will provide an educational experience to children.

The sanctuary forms part of a long-term tourism vision being driven to support a small campground and offbeat "glamping" to attract tourists to stay in Titjikala whilst visiting Alice Well and Chambers Pillar Historical Reserve.  

The Titjikala Wildlife Sanctuary will provide a much-needed community resource for:

1.  Expansion to enable care of all injured, sick and orphaned wildlife.
2.  Feeding stations and a carers station / office.
3.  Employment and training opportunities for Wildlife Carers, Rangers and Tour Guides. 
3.  Education to visiting school children and tourists alike. 


DONATIONS AND FUNDING 

Donations will be utilised to fund immediate requirements and form part of co-contribution funding being sought from the Northern Territory Government to fund a Masterplan and the immediate requirements for fencing on a larger lot.

Donations will be used for: 

1.  Purchasing of feed and feeding stations
2.  Veterinary bills 
3.  Medication and animal first aid supplies
4.  Fencing
5.  Scoping fees for scoping and establishment of a Masterplan


THE MASTERPLAN

Troppo Architects (architecture, project management, civil and structural engineers),  QS Services, Centre for Appropriate Technology, Balarinji, and Ingenuity Consulting have been carefully selected to provide services in establishing a Masterplan.

The Masterplan will define all requirements of the establishment of the Wildlife Sanctuary such as surveying, architectural and civil drawings, engineering, essential services required, concept designs, costings and media and marketing.  

The Masterplan will also include scoping and concept designs of the long-term vision to establish the campgrounds and tourist accommodation facilities. 

The vision is for the development to have minimal impact on the natural landscape and environment, and provide for a solar-powered facility.
