Tony Aversa was senselessly attacked on Saturday, September 5 at the 710 Beach Club in Pacific Beach while “just doing his job.” Someone got angry when denied entry for not wearing a mask.

The crowds flocked to the beach this Labor Day weekend to enjoy fun in the sun. Tony got an ambulance ride to the emergency room, a CT scan, a broken nose/sinus cavity and a long road to recovery ahead. This is the face of our “frontline” workers fighting this battle.

Like so many others, Tony has suffered through this year – stressed financially by the shutdowns/partial re-openings and emotionally by the uncertainty of the future. He has devoted twelve years in San Diego, honing his craft and planning to, one day, open his own place. To top it off, he has to endure another shot in the face -- only this time, it’s literal.

Tony has been out of commission all week; he can’t sleep and can’t eat due to the pain of his swollen mouth. He has yet to see a specialist to identify any additional damage and plan the surgery and treatment required for his recovery.

This sorry excuse of a man running at Tony with all his force was not enough to take him down. Yeah, Tony can take a hit. He ran inside, got ice and proceeded to chase down the pair. The assailant got away (white t-shirt, ponytail) and is wanted by SDPD.

Cell phone and security footage shows the senseless attack.

Special thanks to anyone who can help identify and locate this loser. He needs to be held accountable for his actions.

This is NOT okay. We need to send a clear message to him and others like him.

San Diego is such a great city of hospitality. Please remember to be kind to the folks who are putting themselves at risk so we can grab a drink or enjoy a meal out with friends and family. Anti-maskers are in the minority, but it seems like their animosity has been dangerously escalating as the pandemic drags on with no end in sight.

It's not just Karen's mouthing off anymore.

With many months ahead of mandated masks, we need to do more to protect and support the frontline people who are charged with enforcing these policies. Tony has consistently showed up to work – so others can enjoy a good time. Now it’s time to show him our support.

Thank you for simply wearing a mask.

And sincere thanks to all who help restore Tony’s pretty face!
