This Is Africa: Computer for Ngala

Friends, family and acquaintances,
As many of you already know, this April (April 25th 2015 to be exact) I will be embarking on an adventure of a lifetime. I am leaving that day for Nakuru, Kenya, a large village about three hour's drive North from Nairobi. I'm traveling through the abroad program: ELIabroad.org (http://eliabroad.org/destinations/africa/kenya). Nakuru is a beautiful and lively urban center where education is extremely valued. Originally I planned to travel to Guatemala for a school trip but after the trip was cancelled, I began my search elsewhere. I found this program online after looking for hours for programs that would serve a purpose and utilize my skills in communicative disorders. Then I found Kenya. The application/acceptance process was long but in my heart I knew I would find my way to Kenya.

I will be teaching at the Deaf school in Nakuru called The Ngala School of the Deaf. Unfortunately they do not have a school website, but videos can be searched in youtube. It is a wonderful school where the motto is: "Education for All is Power". That takes the words right out of my mouth. I think education is so empowering. It cannot be taken away and there are no limits to what you can learn. I am honored to be one of the chosen applicants to teach at this special school.

I have asked the volunteer coordinator who currently lives in Nakuru to where I could make a donation. She told me cash donations are not typically encouranged, but the school headmaster says what they could really use is a computer and a projector. A computer and a projector! Such a humble request when I walk from building to building at my university where every classroom is equipped with both.

While these items are simple, I need your help. I want to bring a brand new laptop computer and projector with me on my trip to present to the school. Every penny that is donated to this fund will be used to purchase the equipment. If there is any extra money after the purchase is made, it will be spent on other classroom utensils for the children.

To reiterate, my trip has been paid for and NONE of the donations are going toward any travel fees.

Please consider helping me with this cause, it's a once in a lifetime opportunity for me and I want to make my trip as meaningful as possible both in my spirit of going and in a sustainable donation that will truly make a difference in the classroom by providing more opportunities for success in education.

One of my dearest friends who has inspired me to make this fund official reminds me: "Embrace the challenge and accpet any adversity that may come your way abroad. Tell yourself "TIA TIA TIA (This is Africa!)"

So hey, This Is Africa!
Help me make a difference because education for all is power.
