My name is Sara, the artist behind The Vanishing Paint. Thank you for looking into what this is about.
First, a little information about what The Vanishing Paint is. I painted a critically endangered or extinct animal every day for a year. Many I had to contact the very people who discovered or study the animal because there are no pictures of them. I did not copy any photos, even those that were sent to me by the scientists. If I could only find front-facing pictures I would do a side view. For some of the animals, I had to look at similar species because there was nothing but a written description. The paintings are intended to be accurate but are intended to show the personality and life of these animals rather than be a cold but very exact illustration.
I have so far funded this all on my own, but now I need help to continue. My goal is to have some art shows exhibiting all 366 (since 2020 was a leap year) paintings. When we think of animals going extinct, we tend to think of only a few. Seeing 366 of them in one place will hopefully have quite the impact on people. Eventually, I will sell them but I want to use much of the proceeds to help fund good conservation groups that protect some of the animals I have painted. There are conservation groups that don't just help the animal but gives the locals in the area a way to help themselves while protecting the animal.
Unfortunately, I simply cannot afford the cost of framing all the paintings. I was given one quote of over $2,700.00 back when I first started this. That almost made me quit, but I am so passionate about this project I decided to go on and trust I would be able to find help to make this happen. I am optimistic that it will be possible to find someone who can do a quality job for less. So, why am I asking for $3000.00 if the quote was not that much? I am not going to be selling the paintings at first because I don't want to diminish the impact of the full show. I would also be sad if someone had a favourite animal that was left out of a show they attended because it had already been purchased. I still want to raise money for conservation efforts even when the paintings are not for sale. To accomplish that, I will be getting things like stickers, prints, and other things I can sell at shows. I do not have a complete list of charities yet, and fully expect more will be added as this project continues. Each of the charities must have a very good rating though.
I do not have a set time that I need these funds. The minute I have enough funding I will be getting these paintings framed, and talking to galleries. Of course, I would love to start framing these tomorrow, but I have been working on this for a whole year so far. Ideally, I will be able to begin framing within a couple of months, and then start shows soon after.
Your support is vital to make this happen. Truly, without your help, I will not be able to bring these paintings to the public. Together we can accomplish so much good in raising awareness, support, and even teaching people a little about the incredible variety of animals we are at risk of losing.
