Sen. Cantwell arrests her constituents instead of freeing immigrants in detention
We need defense funds! While The Seattle Six attorney is representing them for free, there remains unavoidable legal and court costs, in addition to funds for potential monetary fines if found guilty.
On August 6, 2019 six Seattleites were arrested in Senator Maria Cantwell’s (D-WA) Seattle office while waiting for her to respond to their longstanding request to take a more active and public role in ending the ongoing abuses of immigrants. The Seattle Six are Dr. Howard Gale, Jennifer Gosar, Elizabeth Graham, M.Ed., Nikita Minkin, Nick Peda, and Jessie Yadlowsky.
The Seattle Six were part of a larger group that had been imploring Cantwell, since July 2, 2019, to travel to the border camps, make public the abuses occurring there (through press interviews and a town hall forum), and to end funding for the indiscriminate detention and deportation of refugees and asylum seekers.
When The Seattle Six were arrested all of their requests had gone unanswered for five weeks. Cantwell has maintained her silence for over six months now, despite the defendants, and the larger group, continuing to pursue these requests. The one exception to Cantwell's failure to respond was sending an email on October 23 congratulating herself for doing the very thing The Seattle Six had been asking her not to do -- funding more detention!
The Seattle Six, along with many of Cantwell's constituents, remain disappointed and shocked that Senator Cantwell's office would take action to arrest the people fighting for justice instead of taking action to end the arrest and abuse of immigrants.
It took thirty years for the US to first apologize for the 1940's internment of Japanese Americans. In 1976 President Ford said "We now know what we should have known then." How is it possible that we do not know now of the moral shame we will burden our children and grandchildren with?
While The Seattle Six attorney is representing them for free, there still remains unavoidable legal and court costs, in addition to potential monetary fines if found guilty. Any monies raised that are not used for the legal defense of The Seattle Six will be used to continue the fight against immigrant abuse.
Publicity around The Seattle Six trial will serve to reinvigorate an awareness of continuing and worsening injustice at the border and throughout immigrant communities. This trial will also expose the failure of our elected officials to fight against this abuse in a manner proportional to the moral outrage it is.
