The Laumet family's next journey

Donation protected
Hello, my name is Sophie Laumet and I’m a 34 year old stay-at-home Awty mom of three: Gabrielle (7), Romane (5) and Adrien (3). I’ve chosen to devote these last years to my family, to my husband’s career and I am so proud for it. This decision has also allowed me to grow into some of my other passions, like cooking, to discover how sewing could be fun, to do crafty things with the kids! All the things I can’t really do anymore.

We moved as a family to the United States as a real project to build a life in a country that we definitely learned to love. This country offered my husband, Geoffroy a possibility to accomplish his dream job, where he feels he can really make an impact to improve the life of cancer patient and survivors. He is a scientist, doing research at M.D. Anderson for the past 6 years. Lately, he’s been working on side effects of cancer treatment (e.g., pain, depression).

Last November, I was diagnosed with a stage IIb Breast Cancer. It has been, as you can imagine, a real shock – I have no genetic background of cancer, I’m young and have been quite healthy all my life and I basically had 0 risk factor…

After a complete mastectomy, a second surgery for an infection 3 weeks later, I’ve started a 12 session chemotherapy. I will then need another chemo treatment, and then weeks of radiation. With the confirmation that my breast and the rest of my body is healed, we’ll be able to move to the reconstructive surgery stage.

With no family around, we’ve relied heavily on friends, Awty parents and church members to help us get through it. We are so thankful for all the support we already received and are still receiving!

But the battle is not over, the journey is just starting…

That process has been hard on everyone. Positivity is our Motto. But the kids are having a hard time, they’ve been picked up, dropped off, obviously by amazingly generous people, some we’ve never even met before! As you can understand, for a child, it is stressful.

With continued counsel from my Awty parent friends, my family and I need to make some adjustments, such as:

-          By getting out of our 3-times-over-3-years-flooded complex where mold grows and pests have become an everyday issue. It is not a healthy place to live in anymore.

-          By renting a home closer to Awty to facilitate continued help from the school community.

-          By hiring movers for the new place as I can’t pack and load under my treatments.

-          By trying to find an everyday place (daycare or preschool) for our 3 year old as I’m getting weaker and can’t take care of him as I did before.

-          By helping us with the financial burden of cancer treatment

At the urging of my Awty parent friends, I’ve agreed to setup this GoFundMe website. In light of our newfound journey, I humbly ask you to consider making an investment in my family and I. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.
