The Heidi Project

On New Year's Eve 2012, Heidi Zubal and her parents received the news that all families pray not the hear. She was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

What started out as a sinus infection turned into bronchitis and in mid-December, three lumps had developed, a small one on the left lower part of her neck and then one under each armpit about the size of golf balls forbidding her to even raise her hands above her head. After having a biopsy performed on December 27, 2012, Heidi started getting more symptoms including all over body pain that she described felt "as if someone was constantly stabbing me with a knife making me grounded to the bed along with dark rings under my eyes."

Heidi was employed full time installing ceramic tile and part time as a cook in a restaurant. On top of her two jobs, she is also going to school for drafting and design. At the time that she was diagnosed, she did not have health insurance. Her and her mother began looking into insurance companies that would offer Heidi coverage with a preexisting medical condition and a policy that would cover her chemotherapy, PET scans and blood work. They thought that they had found a company that would meet these needs, however they soon found out that the insurance company had lied to them.

As she was getting worse, a tumor developed on the right side of her neck and was growing by the week, however Heidi's parents assured her that they would do whatever it took for her to undergo the chemo treatments. On January 30, 2013, Heidi met with Dr. Vijay Paudel from the Coastal Cancer Center and he ordered a PET scan for February 4 and chemo to start February 8. The PET scan showed that Heidi is at a stage 4 and is looking at roughly 12 rounds of chemotherapy with the possibility of radiation. Her parents have taken on all financial responsibilities at this time.

Heidi has applied for both Medicaid and Social Security Disability, however neither of these have been approved as of this time.

Family, friends and loved ones will be holding a benefit on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at the Millvale VFW Post 118 at 605 North Avenue from 7pm till 11pm. Today we are asking for your establishment to make this a success, as the family is encountering mounting medical and household bills. A Chinese auction, a 50/50 raffle, strip tickets, a "Karaoke off" and Monte Carlo games will be featured at our benefit as well as other prizes! Please help support "The Heidi Project" by donating to us from your company; gift certificates/cards, or a gift basket of your company product. All donations big and small are greatly accepted, as we would be honored for you to help us out.

Food will be provided and there will be a cash bar. Any contributions will be greatly appreciated by the Zubal Family.
