Girl on the Greyhound; Photojourney

·I have surpassed my goal, thanks to all my wonderful supporters. I am going to leave this open, but know that my need is no longer urgent. If you would like to pledge in order to  receive artwork, please go ahead. I will be rolling anything leftover into production of the work. ·

"The Girl on the Greyhound" is a 7-14 day photography trip through Eastern Washington, Idaho, and Western Montana.  The journey will take place in late September 2017, and will be split between travelling on Greyhound buses and the occasional rental car. This project is expansion on my body of work “Outside”, "The Girl on the Greyhound" takes the guiding principles of "Outside" and applies them to places that currently exist for me only as memory.

“Outside” is an ongoing series of photographs examining themes of isolation and identity, either as a person or as a place. I explore the idea of exclusion, of ways in which certain things are willfully left out. “Outside” is my core project. Most of my other work stems from this project. “Outside” remains vital because I keep finding new ways to build on the core ideas. Each new project demands changes, but the core concept stays strong.

Most of the images for “Outside” are created in Seattle or Butte, Montana. I travel to Butte by tagging along with relatives, driving back and forth along the I-90 corridor. Part of what makes “Outside” work is the deep familiarity I have of both Seattle and Butte. The layers of memories combined with knowing what the places are now makes the artwork strong and personal. But it is important for me to find ways to bring other dimensions to the work.

I want to turn my camera on places where I have the memories, but no longer really know the places. I want explore the unfamiliar/familiar. My goal is to retake the route of my childhood. Every summer my sister and I crisscrossed Eastern Washington, Idaho, and Western Montana on the Greyhound. We were sent from relative to relative. The start was always Seattle, the end always Butte. We roamed about Eastern Washington, then journeyed north and south into Idaho.

My artwork is inherently auto-biographical. It may be pictures of walls or windows or strangers, but it is all about me learning about me and through that the world. This trip is meant to tap into a deep part of myself that has been neglected for many years.

This is something I have wanted to do for a long time but am not able to afford to do it.  I plan to obsessively photograph the journey and to suppliment those photos with drawing and writing. The mass of imagery and text I generate will most likely become a part of  photo installations, videos, and potentially a self-published book. I will be offering prints of selected images from "The Girl on the Greyhound" as thank you gifts for donations at certain levels.
