New Frederick online news site!

Donation protected
Help me start an online newspaper covering Frederick and surrounding areas.  Let me tell you a bit about who I am, and why Frederick needs another source for news.

I am a seasoned reporter with a stack of stories to tell and no place to tell them.  An online weekly newspaper, The Frederick Extra, will offer real reporting and informed opinion. The Frederick Extra will cover the stories you aren’t reading in your daily paper, or cover the ones you are reading in a more profound way.

Journalistic rigor, reporting on complex issues and going the extra mile for the real story, is fast becoming obsolete. News is reduced to clickbait and easily digestible bites as newsrooms continue to shrink. Frederick and Maryland lost a critical and respected voice when the Gazette papers shuffled off to dead paper land.

As a reporter, columnist, radio and television personality in Frederick over the past 30 years, I have amassed a wealth of trusted contacts that span industry, business, government, education and nonprofit sectors.

And those contacts trust me, which is one reason I consistently receive tips that others do not.

Regardless of my personal political leanings, people know that I will dig into a story and not let go until I have squeezed out the essential truth, partisanship be damned.

I will be the publisher, primary writer, editor and janitor for The Frederick Extra, but will rely on some very talented contributors for opinions, stories, photographs, illustrations, and IT  help.

The online site will feature new stories every Thursday, but will update and report as needed throughout the week.

Although the focus is on Frederick County, The Frederick Extra will not neglect regional, state or even national stories that are relevant to the people of Frederick County.

The Frederick Extra is partnering with a local radio station to bring the paper to life, with interviews featuring the people who are at the center of these stories. Extra Talk with Katherine Heerbrandt will air on Thursday drive time on 1450 AM, WTHU.ORG.

Launch date is scheduled for October.
