Hello and thanks in advance for checking out our GoFundMe! My name is John Horgan and I'm currently working as a Sexuality Educator for adults with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (ID/DD). I'm joined by Jim Ingalls, a fellow sexuality trainer, and Susan Ahlin, an experienced bookseller and writer.
The First Chapter was an idea born from a problem faced by two educators working to improve the lives of families with at least one parent with ID/DD. Many of the individuals we support are unable to find competitive employment because no employer has ever given them a chance. Our solution to this problem was to start a bookstore where the employees are exclusively individuals from the ID/DD community with zero previous work experience.
We are currently working with The Leominster Autism Project and the city of Leominster to select a suitable location for this project.
Donations to this fund will go directly towards initial inventory and advertising. Left over funds will be placed in an account to help employees with the initial cost of getting a job, which might include new clothes or shoes for work.
