Protecting Our Children in Day Care

Camden's Legacy: Saving children's lives.

Help us to continue advocating for and educating Virginia's parents, childcare providers and lawmakers on creating safe, affordable childcare.

The Cami Campaign

The Cami Campaign, a pending 501c3, was founded in 2012 after the death of Elly (nee Henderson) and Cameron Lafkin's infant, Camden "Cami" Lafkin while in daycare. It was only during the criminal investigation of the childcare provider that we learned that there was no way we could have accessed the resources we would have needed to perhaps prevent Camden's death.

Out of our loss our family founded The Cami Campaign. Our mission is to educate parents and providers on how to choose safe child care and advocate for laws that increase child care safety standards in Virginia, at no cost to the parent.

The Cami Campaign’s vision is that every Virginia family has access to safe, affordable childcare.

Changing the Law

In 2014 the law we co-wrote and championed "Camden's Law", or HB412 (Virginia), passed both the House and the Senate.

Camden’s Law (HB412) is the first step in the implementation of mandatory fingerprint background checks for all childcare providers. Elly Lafkin will sit on the HB412 task force providing a working mother’s perspective as they write the new legislation.

We need your help to be able to continue our work.

We have been very blessed to have the opportunity to share our story nationally and to be invited to advocate on behalf of Virginia families. We need your help to be able to keep working. We are in the process of acquiring our 501c3 status. This is a long process and we have some immediate needs that can’t wait.

Elly & Cameron (both working parents) are struggling to keep up with the cost of The Cami Campaign's education and outreach efforts.

What will the money help us do?

1.Childcare Essentials Packet. Create, print and distribute more pamphlets to Virginia OB Gyn offices for inclusion in new mom packets, pediatrician's offices for well baby visit packets and childcare centers for parent education. This information is in high demand and we have several businesses waiting for it!

2. Travel expenses for Elly to participate in the HB412 task force. Gas money for the 300 mile round trip drive from her home to Richmond once a month.

3. Maintain the website with easily accessed, up to date information for families across the state. Including: Questions to ask your child care provider, safe sleeping practices and recommended providers through ChildCare Aware.

4. Advocacy support. Elly does a great job of keeping Virginia's working families top of mind of many state and federal politicians and local and national media outlets. In order to do this she meets with them frequently and this means trips to Washington, DC and Richmond, VA. Money will help pay for gas and lodging when necessary.

We have come a long way and there is still a long way to go!

Please help us continue to educate parents and increase child care safety standards by supporting The Cami Campaign.
