Jasper's Hip Dysplasia Surgery Fund

Jasper is a super sweet, very smart, very playful 6 month old Border Collie puppy. The week of Thanksgiving he was diagnosed with severe hip dysplasia on both sides and later diagnosed with OCD (osteochondrosis dessicans) in his shoulder. 

Jasper needs to have a Double Pelvic Osteotomy on both hips and an arthroscopic treatment for shoulder OCD. The total cost of these three procedures will be around $9,000. 

I am desperately seeking help to pay for these operations. We were given an extremely positive prognosis if we go through with these surgeries. We were told that Jasper could live a completely normal, pain-free life if we opt to do the DPO. 

We want to give him the best quality of life possible and getting this taken care of while he is young will give him the most comfort throughout his life.

FULL STORY: 

The day before Thanksgiving we took Jasper, our 6-month-old Border Collie to the vet to have him looked at. He had been bunny hopping when he runs, walking with a narrow "duck foot", and most recently, seemed to have injured his front leg. The vet did a thorough physical examination but suggested we take x-rays to assess the real cause. 

When we received the call from our vet later that day, we were devastated by the results.  Jasper was diagnosed with severe hip dysplasia on both sides. We looked at the scans with the vet and he showed us that both hips are significantly out of place. For a puppy this young and of this breed, this kind of diagnosis should not happen.

At the time of this appointment, there was no visible injury to his front leg, so we put him on a round of NSAIDs for the pain. He continued to limp for three more weeks and still has a slight limp after a long day of playing.

At our original consultation, while examining the x-rays, the vet walked us through our surgical options. If we decided not to do surgery, we could manage his pain with medication, but that there is no guarantee how the hip dysplasia will progress over the years. 

It is absolutely heartbreaking to see such a sweet puppy given such a bleak future. If we opted for life long pain management, there is a possibility that at an early age he could lose his ability to walk. This greatly diminishes his quality of life and I don't think my heart could bear to see my puppy struggling through that. 

Fortunately, we caught this early enough that there is a surgery that can be done called a Double Pelvic Osteotomy. This can only be done on dogs who are under 12 months of age and have not finished growing.

We scheduled an appointment with a recommended orthopedic surgeon to discuss our surgical options. We took another round of x-rays and discovered that Jasper is in pain and the dysplasia is progressing quickly. Not only that, we discovered that his shoulder has what is known as OCD (osteochondrosis dessicans) which will also require surgical intervention.

Fortunately, the surgeon was very positive about the outcomes of doing a Double Pelvic Osteotomy on his hips. With these surgeries, we can expect that he will have an absolutely normal life, free from pain. And even in the scenario in which he does develop any osteoarthritis 10 years down the line, the pain will be minimal compared to what he would have had to endure.

I love this dog like he is my own child. Putting him down is not an option and pain management doesn't seem to be the right choice because he is already in pain and already showing signs of being unable to do things that a normal dog can do.
