WYA Europe: The Solidarity Project

Introduction

For the past 16 years, World Youth Alliance (WYA) office in Brussels has been handling its Internship Program , held thrice every year. Through this program, many of the projects and activities we organized were made possible. With the help of our interns, we were able to maintain the presence in the European institutions and promote Human Dignity in the society.

We at World Youth Alliance Europe train young leaders who possess a strong desire to protect and promote human dignity while making a positive impact on society. The interns who come to our office are proactive, self-driven, resourceful, detail-oriented and humble individuals with a willingness to learn. Most importantly, they believe in the Mission of the World Youth Alliance by striving to use their freedom for excellence to respond to the challenges arising in today’s society.

Each new intern accepted into the Regional Office brings an arsenal of skills to the table, as well as enthusiasm to make a positive impact in society. The interns come from different countries all over the world, having diverse cultural backgrounds and various experiences. With this internship, every intern gets the opportunity to grow and sharpen their skills, in light of WYA’s person-centered approach.

Interns undergo the Certified Training Program and work in a dynamic environment within the fields of project management, advocacy, communications, marketing, fundraising and social media. As a result, the interns come out of the training program as active members, ready to transform the lives in their communities.

However, recently, we at World Youth Alliance Europe have been facing financial challenges with the funding for the stipends for our Regional Interns and we really need to ask your help! We want to raise awareness and funds for the work that they do, as part of our internship and we believe that you can help by supporting our cause.

Please, consider a €10, €30, €50, €100 or more donations to support WYA Europe interns!

Where did the idea come from?

In order to support the upcoming batches of future interns willing to undergo this program, the Regional Office of World Youth Alliance Europe has decided to start a crowdfunding campaign for its Internship Programs. The campaign titled The Solidarity Project was inspired by the transformative and tremendous work performed by the interns in the various projects they have handled in our Regional Office. Time and time again, they have exceeded our expectations by showing their willingness to perform overtime work, despite the hectic workload. They have shown dedication and compassion by participating in various voluntary work by reaching out to marginalized sectors in Europe, even sacrificing their free time to do so. The numerous successful projects they have handled had not only left a positive mark in our community, but also inspired many WYA members to take this opportunity by showcasing their interest in the upcoming Internship programs.

As a result, we would like to give back to the Regional Interns who join our Internship program by creating a fundraising campaign for those willing to showcase their passion and dedication in the next Internship batches. As such, we at WYA Europe believe that we can inspire the same solidarity they displayed by asking you to give a small donation to this cause so we can support future batch of interns who will make a difference in their internships, through our projects in Advocacy, Education and Culture. By supporting them, you can open the door of opportunities for young people who are inspired to defend and promote human dignity in the various socio-political arenas, like the European Union, Council of Europe and others.

Where will the money go?

The funds gathered in this campaign will be used to provide our interns with the stipend of €120.00 euros per month, within the Batch 3 of the internship program from September to December 2017. This will greatly benefit interns who are in dire need of financial assistance, since this amount covers their personal expenses, such as groceries and transportation around Brussels.

Until now, WYA Europe has managed to provide accommodation for interns using the flat, especially those interns coming from places outside of Brussels. At the same time, these funds will be used for interns who wish to avail of the monthly stipend of 120.00€, particularly for interns who are in need of financial assistance.

Why are we passionate about human dignity?

We are World Youth Alliance (WYA), a global coalition of young people from ages 10 to 30 established in 1999 at the United Nations. In the 1999 Conference on Population and Development, the organization’s founder, Anna Halpine, stood up against a group claiming to represent the youth, whose demands included abortion as a human right, sexual rights for children and deletion of parental rights. Knowing the implications of these demands, Anna called the delegates of the conference the following day to rethink the needs of the youth, such as clean water, education, healthcare and employment, taking into account the needs of developing countries which are struggling to provide for their citizens. She further emphasized the need to focus on the dignity of the human person in the discussion of the youth’s necessities towards a holistic development. As a result, the delegations positively received her statements and furthermore invited her to maintain a permanent presence at the United Nations.

To this day, we have over one million members worldwide working together with WYA’s main headquarters in New York and six regional offices in Europe, North America, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and the Asia Pacific, through Advocacy, Education and Culture. Our Advocacy Work provides training for members on diplomacy and international relations by working together with delegates from international institutions, such as the United Nations, the European Union and the Organization of American States for research and policy-making. Secondly, for Culture, we provide culture and art programs, like the European Arts Forum, the Manhattan International Film Festival, and WYA Chamber Orchestra. As part of our Educational programs, each regional office offers an Emerging Leaders Conference (ELC) for youth leaders in each specific region, as well as the Certified Training Program, which is equipping them with the knowledge to articulate and defend the principles of the dignity of the person within the public square. Finally, under the Education the Internship Programs provides opportunities for young people who are inspired by the ideas and work of the WYA to gain professional skills working on WYA’s projects and a substantive learning experience on WYA’s core ideas.

As members of World Youth Alliance, we maintain that all human beings have dignity and therefore are subjects who should be respected. Human dignity is intrinsic, independent of any individual condition; it cannot be granted or rescinded by the State. It is the foundation of all human rights, and States have the responsibility to recognize and respect the dignity of the human person. Conversely, a proper understanding of the human person fosters freedom, solidarity, authentic development, and true respect for human dignity and rights. WYA is equipping a generation of young people with the tools necessary to propose this vision to the world and bring about a cultural transformation!
