Courage By Anna Butler "” Nov 22, 2013 5:45pm

November 22, 2013

Today was one of the longest days of my life. My best friend's world got flipped upside down within a matter of 12 hours. My friends, Jill and Scott will need courage. Both for different reasons.

3 weeks ago Scott started feeling sick. This time of year, his family and friends, along with his physician thought the culprit was the flu. As time went on, Scott was not feeling better, he was actually feeling worse. He developed a fever. He was very sleepy. He is a hard worker, so he continued to go to the gas station and open the store. In the meantime, he was feeling so bad he called his physician and requested lab work. Yesterday he had his blood drawn. This morning while at work he received news that his white blood cell count was 100 plus. The physician urged him to go to the Emergency Room.

Within a few hours pathology and hematology were consulted. After further testing, a CT scan and a MRI, Scott was diagnosed with Leukemia. Scott will have a port placed for Chemo this weekend. He will also undergo a biopsy on Monday. The Oncologist believe that the type of Leukemia that Scott has is called Acute Myeloid Leukemia or AML. This will be confirmed by the additional testing on Monday.

Please keep the Mahoneys in your prayers. For all of those who asked, how they can help; we are hoping to figure out the best way we can support the Mahoneys through Scott's treatment. I will talk to the family more this weekend and come up with a plan. Until then, please pray for courage and strength for Scott as he faces multiple tests, chemo and an estimated stay of 4 - 6 weeks in the hospital. Please pray for courage as Jill tells Abby about her Dad's illness. Positive thoughts, energy and love to this amazing family as day one is almost over and the rest of their journey just begins.

My new life... By jill mahoney "” Nov 25, 2013 12:54am

First I want to thank all of you for all of your prayers, positive thoughts, and offers to help. I'm so overwhelmed right now I don't know what anyone can do to help at all. Today was overall a good day. Abby spent the day with her best friend Tyler Vaughan (thanks Beth for having her), she had a blast and even got to do some homework while there. I guess that's what happens when your best friends mom is a teacher 💜. Our day at home started out by a surprise "hospital survival kit" dropped off by one of my amazing friends Michele Buss. It was much needed. It contained so many of my favorite things!!! And Abby even stole a few things out of the bag. Thanks again Michele. Another amazing friend Chrissy Sprouse, did a random act of kindness and showed up with dinner and helped me clean and do laundry all afternoon. It was great not to be all alone in my house. Thanks Chrissy!!! After dinner, Abby and I went to visit Scott. He seemed in good spirits tonight. His bone marrow biopsy is tomorrow and that is where we will get more info. They also start his 24 hour a day chemo tomorrow, so please pray. His good friend Adam came to watch some football with him after Abby and i left. He has great nurses, they don't ever say much about us being there at all hours of the day. Our biggest surprise of the day was Abby's elf, Sparkles came back today. The cold weather must have confused her and she came a little early, crazy girl. Abby of course was super excited, she loves her elf. Again, I want to thank everyone for everything they have offered. Please keep praying. If you can please consider going to the bone marrow registry and please donate blood. We love you all, Jill and Abby

Today was a big day... the bone marrow biopsy day. Dr. Hall (Scott's heme-onco doctor) did an amazing job. Scott said it barely hurt (I can't imagine). We got the results very quickly to learn that it is confirmed AML- acute myeloid leukemia. So the plan is to go forth with treatment as planned and start 24 hour a day chemo tomorrow am. Abby went to school today, had a great day. Tomorrow is grandparents day and she is looking forward to all of her grandparents being there. We spent the evening at the hospital and ate dinner with Scott. We are home now and getting ready to go to bed early. Thanks again for everyone's ongoing support and prayers. We love you all.

Good Morning!

Scott has started his 24/7 chemo. He seems in good spirits. He truly is one of the strongest people I have ever met. Jill continues to be at the hospital as much as possible. Abby is maintaining a healthy balance between school, visiting her Daddy and spending time with her Grandparents, classmates and neighbors.

Jill has had to make a tough decision to go back to work in order to maintain the family's health insurance and monthly bills. Her Nurse Manager has been extremely helpful in creating and working around Scott's schedule as well as Abby's. Jill will work 48 hours every two weeks while Scott is being treated for his Leukemia.

I have started this page in order to help Jill with the financial burden of keeping her household running while Scott in undergoing treatment. Thank you so much for the outpouring of love, not only financially - but through meals, phone calls, cards, registering to become a bone marrow donor, giving blood, thoughts and last but certainly not least PRAYERS.

Please help us continue to surround this family with love and support.

Sincerely,

Anna
