A Little R&R For Displaced Race Horses

My name is Destiny Daniel, and horses are my pride, joy and salvation. I was practically born on horseback, and did most of my growing up in the racing world. When I was 14, you could find me elbow deep in sand and dirt, wrestling squirrely thoroughbreds at the track when my girlfriends were having sleepovers or shopping at the mall. You could say my whole life has been cleaning stalls, grooming, feeding and galloping like crazy. An easy life it has not been, but I've had the pleasure and the inspiration to learn the language of horses & listen to their stories... and try to close the gap between a horse's spirit and human understanding.

On Valentine's Day 2013, my calling to help the horses came to light in a very real way. I was hauling three horses across Wyoming, and my truck hit black ice. My heavy steel Titan trailer spun hard and sent my truck flying off the road. In the blink of an eye, I felt metal and glass crushing all around me... the roof of my truck was crushing my shoulder, and I knew I was going to die... there wasn't a doubt in my mind. As time crept toward my inevitable fate, I was left to face my own failure. My only job in the world was to get those horses from point A to point B safely, and I was letting them down. While the truck bore down on my helpless body, I felt the bones in my back breaking... and I begged. I begged with all my might:

Lord, let me live to help the horses.

I jumped out of the wreckage that day, and looking at my truck, I've no idea how I did it. With a broken back I tried to pull those horses with my bare hands from a pile of steel and bloody snow. Then, like my own crew of angels, help came and I saw two horses standing before the ambulance took me away. Those two were young thoroughbreds I'd taken from the track to give a new chance at life.

They lived. I lived. We defied the odds. One horse-- the most stunning bay mare you've seen in your life-- recovered quickly and began her new life in a home she'll be cherished forever. The other horse was badly injured, and I knew immediately his home was here with me. One painful step at a time, we recovered together. He's my inspiration, my riding buddy, my best friend, and my reminder.... On my darkest days when I doubt I can take another step, we walk on together.

I lived to help the horses, and the horses helped me through. Now it's time to pay it forward.

Please help the Isabel Project come to life. The funds raised by this page will go to the costs of creating a 501c3, and getting established as a non-profit organization. With your help, we can start making a real difference. Life doesn't end after the track. It's just the beginning.
