My name is Shawn Watson Davis, and like Cinderella, I am a devoted family servant. Seven plus years ago, my mother Betty Plummer, (who suffers with Alzheimer’s-dementia, food sensitivities, irritable bowel syndrome, etc.) moved in with my family to be cared for as her health was failing. At that time, I was a 47 year old, (post professional) stay at home mom, my husband was a 47 year old healthy & strong entrepreneur, our daughter was 12 and our son was 9.
4 ½ years later my husband was sick, diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and put on a radiation-chemo therapy regimen that took us back & forth to Detroit, Michigan, sometimes daily for treatments, procedures & care, (at this point, for 1 ½ years I was sandwiched between the care of both, Bruce & mom). Unbelievable!!!!
9/11, 2016, Bruce Randall Davis (age 52), sole provider & devoted husband of twenty three years dies! Leaving me shocked, grieved, exhausted, broken-hearted, and at the helm of our families survival. UNBELEIVABLE!!!!!
Today, 1 ½ years (after Bruce’s passing), our daughter is following in her dads footsteps as a 20 year old accounting major (honor student) at Clark-Atlanta University, in Atlanta, Georgia, our son is now 17 and will be graduating with honors from Lansing Christian School in Lansing, Michigan & also attending Clark-Atlanta in the fall, and our resident grandmother Betty, is now 83, and continuing to thrive & fight back against her bodies assaults’ every day! The problem is that the cost of her care is out pacing her finances! Though Betty is a retired high school vocational education teacher who planned excellently for rainy days & retirement, her efforts have been out matched by the catastrophic costs associated with Alzheimer’s-dementia!
Betty has an excellent team of caregivers that have to be paid! Their bi-weekly & monthly checks have got to be funded. Betty requires total assistance from the time she wakes in the morning to the time she is put to bed at night. She is totally unable to care for herself! That is why after seven years of self-funding we’re reaching out for help!
When a mother stands faithfully by her family, her family ought to be enabled to stand faithfully by her. I am asking, begging, pleading for the human village to stand with us, as we fight daily for mom’s quality of life, and for her to be one of the fortunate ones’ standing when the cure for dementia is found.
Please donate, contribute, jump in this fight!!!
“Cinderella’s” mother has dementia, her princely husband is no more, and her children are our future!
