Thaine’s Autism Treatment

In January 2014, our only son, Thaine, was diagnosed with Autism after he regressed at around 18 months. Some of the things we noticed were, he lost his ability to use sign language, he wouldn’t respond to his name anymore, he wouldn’t look at us, and he lost stability in his core, among other things.
Additionally, he has gut issues (leaky gut, gut dysbiosis, yeast overgrowth, etc), methylation Issues (inability to detoxify at the cellular level), constant inflammation in his brain and hypotonia (low muscle tone). Over the last few years, Thaine has made great progress through multiple biomedical interventions along with speech, occupational and behavior therapy. We have noticed him “coming back to our world” slowly but surely.
But, there is still much more progress to be made. Each year that goes by, he will fall further behind his peers unless we do more. What is Autism?
Autism is a spectrum of disorders characterized by marked abnormalities in communication and social interactions. Two common consistent findings are associated in children with this disorder are diminished oxygenation in specific areas of the brain and a chronic immunologically mediated inflammatory condition in the gut.
What is the scientific rationale behind using stem cells to treat autism?
Current investigative therapies for autism attempt to reverse these abnormalities through administration of antibiotics, anti‐inflammatory agents, and hyperbaric oxygen. Unfortunately, none of these approaches address the root causes of oxygen deprivation and intestinal inflammation.
The rationale behind treating autism with umbilical cord tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells is that autism, and its degree of severity, has been significantly correlated with inflammatory and neuro-inflammatory cytokines including macrophage-derived chemokine (MDC) and thymus and activation-regulated chemokine (TARC). Intravenous administration of umbilical cord MSCs has been shown in multiple clinical trials to decrease inflammation. Decreasing inflammation in the autistic patient may alleviate symptoms of autism.
Through administration of mesenchymal stem cells, we have observed improvement in patients treated at our facilities.
In many cases, children are losing their diagnoses after just one round of therapy.

Q: Why try such an expensive treatment?
A: We believe, based on Thaine’s response to other biomedical interventions which address the neuro-immune and inflammatory issues present in many autistic children, that this treatment with stem cells will is the type of treatment we can do once and see the biggest return. The cost seems high, but any other treatments, like the ones he’s currently on, he will need to be on for many years, if not forever. The cost of this therapy pales in comparison to the amount of money we spend each year on supplements, speech, OT, biomedical doctor visits, etc.
Q: Why is this therapy different / better?
A: These stem cells will basically rebuild his entire immune system. Additionally, they seem to be drawn to areas in the body and brain that are inflamed. I’m not an expert on the science, but everything this therapy addresses are exactly the things we spend thousands on each year supporting with supplements, vitamins and dietary interventions. The clinical trials, case studies and testimonials from other parents of kids who’ve had this therapy are extremely compelling, and we don’t want to pass this up.
Q: I thought autism was a neurological disorder and can’t be “cured”.
A: The autism spectrum is just that, a spectrum. The saying goes, “Once you’ve met one person with autism, you’ve met one person with autism.”
We certainly understand that there are many different “types” of autism. Some children regressed, some didn’t. Some are very severely affected by “autism” and some are just kind of quirky and really good at math. What we do know for certain, is that nobody has been able to provide any answers on the cause(s) of autism. Some interventions have worked to reverse autism in children, and those same interventions don’t work for other kids. Everything is highly individualized when it comes to treating the underlying co-morbid conditions which are associated with “autistic behaviors”.
