My name is Julie Keene, wife of TERRY KEENE, who was diagnosed with Stage IV Metastatic Prostate cancer at the age of 54. He has been bravely battling this terrible disease since August of 2013. I, myself, am a breast cancer survivor of 8 years. Terry and anyone who knows him knows he would give the shirt off his back to help anyone. We are currently raising our granddaughter who is 11 years old. Terry misses the military and misses working. This has been hard for someone who is used to always being on the go.
Terry is a retired sales factory represtative for Spears Manufacturing. Spears was very supportive of his military career and his cancer treatments. He retired from Spears when the treatments interferred with ability to cover the sales territory. Terry is a retired Armor Officer serving over 39 ½ years in the US Army. I had to quit work to assist in his everyday living requirements. It is difficult for him to get around due to all his tumors in his bones and now it has spread to his liver. He can no longer drive because of his neuropathy and overall weakness. He currently walks with the assistance of a walker outside of the house and a cane in the house. He uses a wheelchair for long distances. I take him to all his doctor appointments, blood transfusions, radiation and chemotherapy treatments, etc. We pretty much live at the doctor office or hospital.
We bought what we had hoped to be our dream home (a foreclosure in need of work). Terry could do a lot of the work prior to his misdiagnosis by the Veterans Administration Hospital (VA) of Cincinnati. The house no longer works for us because it is a two-story colonial and the stairs are difficult for him. We cannot afford to move because we put everything we have into this house (which still isn’t finished) and we need to spend everything we have on his medical care. We had to purchase COBRA insurance to enable him to go where we needed for his medical care without completely bankrupting us. But his COBRA will only last for so long.
He served 4 tours in Iraq and was assigned as an advisor on a Military Transition Team Mechanized Battalion staff officer with Iraqi Assistance Group (IAG), 1st Infantry Division (Forward), stationed in An Najaf and Ad Diwaniyah, Iraq from February 2006 through March 2007. His follow on assignment was with the Iraqi Assistance Group, 1st Infantry Division (Forward) as the Deputy J4, developing and establishing IAG's first-ever Iraqi Security Force (ISF) cell from March 2007 through April 2008 and was credited with developing, mapping and validating the Ministry of Interior (MNSTC-I – Multi-National Security Transition Command – Iraq) and Ministry of Defense (MOD – Multi National Corps Iraq) logistics program handbook and training package that was used by every logistical advisor in the Iraqi Theater.
He is in need of the experimental drug (LU-177) since he has used all the previous drugs that no longer reduce his PSA or that can treat his disease. If he can raise enough money and get this treatment it can extend his life up to 3 years. Unfortunately, it is not covered by insurance and it is done in Bonn, Germany. Terry has run out of treatment options and now must try experimental treatment in order to stay alive. First treatment with required scan and hospital stay will cost $15,000.00 out of pocket and each additional treatment will be $10,000.00 which will cost approximately a total of $35,000 to $45,000.00 plus travel expenses. He needs to leave in a few weeks to see if he even qualifies for the treatment. If he doesn’t his only option left is maybe chemotherapy. His body has been battered with so much chemotherapy recently, we are praying this treatment works.
Terry still has the heart and fight of a warrior. He will fight this until the bitter end. He also never wants to see this happen to any other veteran. If he can recover enough where he does not have to spend every week at the doctor office or hospital, he vows to fight the terrible treatment veterans receive.
All funds will be used for his care. If there are funds not needed to provide overall care for him, the excess funds will be donated to a cancer fund of Terry’s choosing.
