Ted Tanouye Memorial Repair Fund

Tax deductible
TSgt Ted Tanouye was a Japanese American soldier in the United States Army who posthumously received the United States military's highest decoration for bravery--the Medal of Honor-- for his actions during World War II.

Tanouye was a graduate of Torrance High School class of 1938. He enlisted in the army while his family was incarcerated under Executive Order 9066 which authorized the forced relocation and confinement of Japanese Americans living in the western states.

During a critical battle in Italy on July 7, 1944, Tanouye repeatedly advanced ahead of his unit under withering machine gun fire to secure a strategic hill. For his actions that day he was awarded the Medal of Honor. He was subsequently killed in action on September 1, 1944.

A grass roots campaign to honor Torrance's hero started with the Torrance High School Alumni Association and was passed to the Ted Tanouye Memorial Foundation (TTMF.) The TTMF was able to secure the necessary funding to create a memorial to Tanouye in front of his high school.

Over the 2018 Veterans Day weekend, the Ted Tanouye Memorial was vandalized. A bronze plaque bearing a copy of Tanouye's Medal of Honor citation was stolen. The pedestal holding the plaque was also damaged.

The TTMF originally raised its funds via a grass roots effort without city funding. We are again asking for your support to replace the plaque, possibly with another material to prevent future vandalism.

Anyone donating $100.00 will receive a copy of the award winning “Citizen Tanouye” DVD. Donations of $200.00 and above will receive both the “Citizen Tanouye” DVD and the “Citizen Tanouye, Classroom” edition DVD with a Teachers Guide Curriculum written by Gary Mukai of the SPICE program at Stanford University.

For a donation of $275.00 you can receive a signed copy of Shane Sato’s coffee table book of WWII Nisei veteran portraits, “The Go For Broke Spirit: Portraits of Courage” which will also be signed by co-author Robert M. Horsting and by two of the veterans whom this work seeks to honor.

For a donation of $425.00 you can receive the award winning “Citizen Tanouye” DVD, the “Citizen Tanouye, Classroom” edition DVD with a Teachers Guide Curriculum and the coffee table book of WWII Nisei veteran portraits, “The Go For Broke Spirit: Portraits of Courage.”

We again ask for your support in repairing the memorial to our country's hero.
