John Lukas Boyd, most of us know him as Luke, is someone who has always been a pillar of strength in whatever situation he faces.  Not only has he played countless hours of football in high school as well as with East Carolina University, but he has served our country honorably in the United States Navy as a SAR (Search and Rescue) swimmer, also known as an Aviation Rescue Swimmer (AIRR).  Their motto is “So Others May Live”.  Aside from all of that, he is also a wonderful husband to Gabrielle and a proud father to three of the most beautiful little girls: Dana, Sarah, and Ellie.

On the 3rd of July, Luke went to the emergency room at Banner Baywood Hospital in Mesa, Arizona with back and stomach pains. After a CAT scan, the doctors determined that there was an obstruction in his bowel and two lesions on his liver.  They did surgery on Sunday, July 6th with hopes of removing the bowel obstruction.  Unfortunately they were not able to remove it and closed him up leaving him with a colostomy bag.   Then the unimaginable happened.  He was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer.   Many tests were done and after a MRI, they also found that the cancer has moved to his pelvis, spine, and right femur.  Needless to say, after spending several days in the hospital in Arizona recovering from surgery, he was flown home to Greenville via medical transport and is currently at Vidant Medical Center awaiting the beginning of his chemotherapy and radiation treatments.  Upon arriving at Vidant, he was met by a team of doctors and has already consulted with an oncologist and radiologist.  The good news is that there is a colon cancer team at Vidant Medical Center and they have taken an interest in this case.  Unfortunately, the bad news is that Luke cannot walk around; for fear that the cancer may cause his leg to break.  Although Luke is still in a lot of pain, he has a positive attitude.  Thankfully, he is strong and young, which are in his favor.  Luke and his family appreciate all the thoughts and prayers.  Unfortunately, visitors are limited at this time.  Cards are always welcome.

Luke has saved countless people over the years, so now it is our turn.  Please help this wonderful man and his family with the cost of this lengthy treatment.  Any and all help will be appreciated.
