Every Euro Counts: Team Netherlands Roller Derby on their road to Manchester!

Orange, orange, orange… nothing rhymes with orange! Team Netherlands is back with a brand new charter and bench crew! After a successful first taste at the European Derby Tournament 2013, the world was officially introduced to these underdogs during the World Cup in 2014. In an equally horrifying and exhilarating first game, the Dutch lionesses took on Team USA and picked up 15 points against the number 1 team in the world. After that, life as we knew it would never be the same.

We proudly represent the Dutch derby community in all that it stands for: down to earth, incredibly eager, and with a work-hard-play-harder mentality. We are super stoked to be playing at the World Championships 2018 in Manchester and cannot wait to meet the other talented national teams on track!

We play the absolute best sport in the world with members who are known, loved and praised for their Do It Yourself mentality, but that can only get us so far. Despite all our hard work in the past months and the months to come, we still need a little help on our road to Manchester. We are in the midst of arranging boutfits, plane tickets, hotelrooms… you get it, the works. We could really use your help with this.

Support us and help us get to Manchester! Thank you!

*For all the folks thinking: what is Roller Derby?*

Roller Derby is a hard hitting, full contact sport on quad skates. Played by two teams of up to 14 players, who both field up to five members for each two-minute jam, simultaneously skating counterclockwise on a circular track. Each team designates a scoring player (the "jammer"); the other four members are "blockers." The jammer wears a helmet cover bearing two stars; the pivot wears a striped cover; the remaining members' helmets are uncovered.

The bout is played in two periods of 30 minutes. Point scoring occurs during "jams": plays that last up to two minutes. During a jam, points are scored when a jammer on a scoring pass (every pass a jammer makes through the pack after the initial pass) laps members of the opposing team. Each team's blockers use body contact, changing positions, and other tactics to assist its jammer to score while hindering the opposing team's jammer. Certain types of blocks and other play are violations; referees call penalties and require violators to serve time in a penalty box.
