Over a year ago Marina developed inflammatory systemic sclerosis. Her skin is diffusely tight and red in her hands, fingers, forearms, arms, chest and legs, the disease is also attacking her internal organs. The heart and the lungs and the esophagus, with this level of aggression Marina's organs will eventually fail WITHOUT the stem cell transplant, resulting in death.
She has been receiving intense monthly treatment on a specific regimen for ten months but her condition continues to deteriorate. What Marina has is life threatening, the mortality for Marina with this disease is heartbreakingly significant with prolonged suffering and disability before death.
There is no effective therapy for this disease EXCEPT for a stem cell transplant at Northwestern Medicine, this procedure is for the most severe of cases and once again without this transplant, likely to result in death.
So imagine receiving this hope to have the Stem Cell transplant to then be told the insurance company will not help.
Marina is sharing her story to create awareness of this deathly disease, anyone that knows Marina will be able to relate with me when I tell you what a kind, loving, loyal, vivacious, strong, positive, humble mother, wife and friend she is. I can't begin to tell you how heartbreaking it is, yet through her pain and this endless rollercoaster ride she has endured for the past year, this woman takes it like a trooper, her perspective and positivity throughout it all will leave you with such admiration and inspiration, touching you to the core of your soul and grounding you to the truest foundation of what life is really about, with this humble heart, we ask that you give what you can.
