<div>My aunt, Liz (Fletcher) Guibord, wife of Chris and <strong>supermom</strong> to 5 amazing kiddos (19-year-old twins: Maddie, Sophie + 15-year-old triplets: Abby, Will, Lucy), was recently diagnosed with <strong>ALS</strong> <strong>(Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis)</strong>. It’s a rare, progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects the nerves responsible for movement, and unfortunately, it is 100% fatal. On average, fewer than 6,000 people are diagnosed each year, and the survival time is just 2 to 5 years, with an unknown quality of life. This tragic diagnosis comes with life-altering challenges, both physical and financial.

<div><strong>The physical effects of ALS are relentless</strong>. Over time, this disease will take away the ability to walk, talk, eat, and eventually breathe, while the mind remains alert. Although we're trying to stay focused on the positives and continue to laugh along the way, we’re also preparing for what’s ahead.

<div>Right now, Liz’s mobility is progressively declining, and tasks that were once second nature now require more time, energy, and assistance. Modifying the home to accommodate these changes is a top priority, so we are fundraising to help cover costs* that insurance won’t touch, including:

<li><strong>Home modifications</strong> for safety, accessibility, and in-home caregiving

<li><strong>Out-of-pocket medical expenses</strong> and equipment (wheelchair, lift chair, adjustable bed, etc.)

<li><strong>Adaptive technology</strong> to help her communicate and maintain as much independence as possible
</li>
<li><strong>Travel</strong> to/from medical appointments
</li>
<li><strong>Supportive care services</strong> before Medicare eligibility kicks in

<div>Adding to the growing list of challenges, a week before her diagnosis, Liz learned that her job is relocating to another state. The family is bracing for the income shift that comes with applying for disability, which will cover only a fraction of her previous salary. Like so many families, they are balancing daily care with long-term planning and are doing so with grace and grit.

<div>While the diagnosis is devastating, Liz is so much more than this disease. She is the glue in our family, the person who always shows up with humor, warmth, and a clear head, even now. She’s staying focused on the present and trying to keep things as normal and full of joy as possible for herself and her loved ones. Though she’s staying strong and focused on the present, there’s no way around the grief of knowing what else this diagnosis will take from her: seeing her kids graduate, celebrating weddings, welcoming future grandchildren, and other major milestones…these are the milestones that matter, and the loss of these moments is real. Your encouragement and support are vital and will empower us to make lasting memories as a family during this difficult time.
