Hi my name is Howie and I am raising money to help fund my dream of competing at the 2016 Paralympics in the sport of paratriathlon.
I have served in the U.S. Army for the past 13 years as an Airborne Ranger. I've spent two years in Iraq helping with Operation Iraqi Freedom and for the last five years I've served as a Parachute Demonstrator on your U.S Army Parachute Team "The Golden Knights" with over 2500 free fall parachute jumps around the country.
September 9th 2012 I was hit by a distracted driver while cycling, leaving me paralyzed from the waist down. While recovering in the hospital I decided that I was not going to let this injury stop me from living my extremely active life! While still in rehabilitation I began researching the changes I would have to make to continue in the sport I love and as an Army Airborne Ranger I decided on a new Ranger objectiv, to go to the Paralympics in 2016.
The sport of paratriathlon will require me to compete in 3 disciplines, first I will have to swim 750 meters (without the use of my legs), followed by a 20 kilometer ride on a handcycle (using only my arms), and finally a 5 kilometer "run" in a racing wheelchair (again using only my arms).
Anyone can compete in the sport but I don't just want to compete...I want to win and I want to win Gold for our country in 2016. This will require me to qualify for the national team and be selected to represent the U.S. not an easy feat.
The money I raise here through your generous donations and the generous donations of your friends, family, and people you tell my story to will be used in a responsible manner to help pay for my training/coaching, my equipment and to afford the race entry fees to compete. I will also use it to help other people who are in similar situations and have similar ambitions as myself!!!
