Kathleen Adamo is our mom, wife, sister, aunt, neighbor, friend and we are standing up for her as she continues the long hard fight against cancer. We are her children, her siblings, her nieces and nephews, her friends. And we ask you to join us in supporting her and our Dad/Peter.
THE MEDICAL CHALLENGE
In Fall 2017, our Mom/Kathy was diagnosed with a slow-growing non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, which was treated with chemo through the Spring 2018 in Atlanta. Thinking she was cured and wishing to be in a smaller city and near their sons, Peter and Kathy moved to Raleigh NC. In Fall 2018, the cancer came back transformed into an aggressive diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) in her liver and bones. From November 2018 to March 2019, she completed the standard chemo regimen given for DLBCL. In January it looked like it was working - the lymphoma cleared from her liver. But by the end of the regimen, it returned and also spread to lymph nodes in her thyroid area.
They quickly got her on a third, much more aggressive chemo treatment, which knocked her down so hard, she was hospitalized with neutropenic fever and a respiratory infection for 10 days. But she fought back and got herself home, with the help of our Dad/Peter, Duke Raleigh nurses and doctors, and lots of prayers. She was then approved for a clinical drug trial that was supposed to be very effective, but disqualified. (They need you to be a certain level of health to be considered.) As of last week, Mom/Kathy was moving about the best she can with a walker and wheelchair.
Our Dad/Pete is taking care of her every moment of every day. He has been amazing and his love and commitment is unwavering. Mom's also getting occupational therapy support and we are about to get palliative care support, too. We pray the new chemo therapy will hold the cancer at bay and give her time to increase her strength so she can get on a trial for CAR T Cell Therapy. This therapy is an FDA approved treatment for DLBCL that Medicare does not cover. (It is a $500,000 treatment.) Medicare will be making an announcement in mid-May if they will cover CAR T Cell Therapy in the future, but even if they say yes, it will not start full coverage until October. And Mom/Kathy can't wait that long.
THE NEED
Friends and family, we need your prayers, any and every kind you can muster, and we need your financial support. The bills beyond what Medicare covers are astronomical. The goal of this fundraiser is $10,000. It is a drop in the bucket, but will make a big difference in the here and now. We'll figure out the rest.
Please pray for our Mom's/Kathleen's strength to increase day to day with this new chemo treatment and that she is both accepted into a clinical trial and APPROVED to participate. Join us in gratitude that her spirits remain hopeful! She is led by her faith through each treatment, each infusion, each day.
Pray for our Dad/Pete's strength, continued health, and peace on this tumultuous journey. Our parents' 50th wedding anniversary is next week, May 17th. Their love is strong. We pray for many more years of their wedded bliss.
And we'll take your prayers and well-wishes too, as this is a road we are on way too early, and we need and want it to end joyously celebrating our mom's complete healing and recovery.
