I've suffered so much from my teeth since I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. They literally crack in half and crumble! Infections in my jaw have caused me to be hospitalized several times already for IV antibiotics. Every time I get a jaw infection, I spend at least a week in the hospital. The pain is completely unbearable. Not only am I in constant, unbearable pain, but the recurring infections in my jaw are actually life threatening. As much as I hate to lose my teeth, I desperately need them removed or the infections will eventually build resistance to the antibiotics and kill me. Unfortunately, the surgery is expensive, and I have to rely on donations from my friends and family to help me afford this life-saving surgery.
The medications I have taken to treat my Stage 4 Cancer have aggravated the problem. When I was diagnosed, they immediately started me on Zometa and found that I was allergic to it, so I was switched to Aredia. These medicines are administered by IV to treat high blood calcium levels in patients with cancer. They also treat bone damage caused by breast cancer that has spread to the bones.
This medicine is a bisphosphonate, and once you are on a bisphosphonate, no dentist, endodontist or oral surgeon will extract your teeth. In fact, they won't touch them because the bisphosphonate raises your risk of getting osteonecrosis of the jaw, ("˜dead jaw,") which is extremely painful and incurable. The only way to treat it is to cut away the infected bone, which risks more osteonecrosis.
I have been to several dentists, 5 Endodontists and 5 Oral surgeons "“ including UT Health and Science Center. I had such high hopes since I've been off of the Aredia for 2 years that UTH&S would just pull my remaining teeth.
Instead, they gave me the same story I have heard so many times. I am just too high a risk of developing osteonecrosis, and the doctor is uncomfortable performing the surgery. I felt that UTH&S was my last hope.
I started bawling and explained to the oral surgeon that I am in constant pain and on penicillin 24/7 until I can get my teeth removed. I also explained that with all of my jaw infections, I am at high a risk of developing osteonecrosis, but pulling my teeth out will at least offer me a chance to survive the infection! I can't stay on antibiotics indefinitely, or I'll develop a resistance to them. Then the infections will become incurable, and I will die. These infections in my jaws are more likely to kill me much sooner than the cancer.
When he saw my desperation and, thankfully, decided to move forward with the surgery.
Now the problem is the money. My medical insurance won't cover the surgery, and my dental insurance only covers $1,500 a year, some of which I've already used. I need at least $10,000 of which I have no way of saving for because my only income is a small disability check that is hardly enough to live on. So I am desperate for help in a very bad way.
God forbid you are ever diagnosed with cancer, but if you do, make absolutely SURE you 1.) If you have strong healthy teeth take care of them. Or if you don't, then 2.) Get all your teeth pulled and replace them with implants or dentures before any major problems start or any treatment is administered. I can't stress this enough! The teeth you knew prior to being diagnosed will NOT be the same teeth after treatment "“ especially if you are diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer.

We have enough to serve over 100 plates. We hope to be able to fill everyones bellies but if we run out, please understand that we don't know how many people will be attending.
WE ARE ACCEPTING ALL DONATIONS FOR THE SILENT AUCTION!
We'll take anything!! Tshirts, Kitchen ware, football tickets, baseball tickets, basketball tickets, camping goods, sporting goods, gift certificates, bath and body goods. We can make baskets out of smaller items so don't hesitate to get rid of all those things in the bathroom and kitchen that someone has given you that are just taking up space.
I also need baskets. You know those things that you're always trying to find a spot for or piling things in? well, please dig them out and please donate them. your donation will truly be appreciated!
