Meet Tammy Goldener. Tammy is a Air Traffic Controller and has been with the FAA as a NATCA member for eighteen years after spending four years as a Controller in the Navy. She is currently stationed at Laguardia Airport in New York City. Tammy is a single mother who lives in Franklin Square on Long Island with her two teenage children and her father.
On the evening of August 5th, Tammy was out on her boyfriend’s 17 foot boat in Great South Bay with her boyfriend, John, and another friend, Chris. While heading home that evening they were heading out of a canal in a 5mph zone. Suddenly, from her right a much larger boat traveling at a high rate of speed appeared heading right towards them. The larger boat rode up and over their boat hitting all three of them.
Chris was hit by the side of the boat and thrown down and hit his head on a cleat on their boat. He suffered a significant concussion.
John was thrown 25 feet from the boat and was struck by the second boat’s prop in the upper thigh. Luckily, a woman in a nearby boat rescued John from the water. Being a retired police officer, he instructed the woman to tie a tourniquet on his leg. There was a 12” long and 2-3” deep gash in John’s leg. The tourniquet likely saved his leg and maybe his life. He also suffered 7 broken ribs. He spent two days in the hospital and is slowly recovering and walking with a cane.
Finally, we have Tammy. John and Chris are out of the hospital and on their road to recovery. But, Tammy’s journey has just begun. Just before the two boats collided, Tammy instinctively raised her right arm up towards her head to protect herself. She was hit straight on with the bow of the other boat striking her right arm. It took the brunt of the impact and she was thrown down into the boat unconscious. With help from nearby boaters, she was brought to shore and EMS was called. Tammy was brought to the emergency room at a nearby hospital to treat her arm. Days later, she was transferred to the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan. She has been in the hospital since the accident and has had 12 surgeries on her arm with several more to come. Tammy still has several surgeries planned as doctors try and reconstruct her arm. They advise that she will be on pain medication for a minimum of 6 months and likely will need medication that would prohibit her from working as an Air Traffic Controller.
