Taiwo Ligali Memorial Scholarship

I want to tell you a brief story about my twin sister, Taiwo Rebecca Ligali—
My twin sister and I were raised to love God and to demonstrate that love by loving other people from all walks of life. Although we argued like any set of sisters would, we were best friends, and no one could tear us apart. We were inseparable. We loved doing everything together—from being in the same classes since elementary school to wearing matching outfits in college. In fact, when Taiwo needed to start wearing glasses, I cried because I couldn’t get glasses and match her!
Since high school, Taiwo aspired to become an attorney. She was actively involved in Moot Court and Mock Trial. I recall days when she would prepare for case competitions and spend hours in front of the mirror rehearsing her roles, enthusiastically shouting “your honor” before each statement. She was persuasive, analytical and had great interpersonal skills. She always seemed to know just how to work effectively with everyone. Taiwo was dedicated to serving others, serious about her education and was committed to her vision of helping communities who had been silenced and marginalized find their voice.
Taiwo’s illness began just days after we turned 18 with a minor headache. Months later, her health took a turn for the worst. Notwithstanding, she had an unwavering spirit to fight. Determined to defeat all odds, Taiwo began her freshman year at Indiana University (IU) in August of 2012 as a Groups Scholar. Unfortunately, her journey at IU was cut short as a result of an emergency hospitalization.
She was cared for by countless doctors and nurses and was treated for a plethora of illnesses. People often wondered how even after 4 bone-marrow biopsies, and being placed on the strongest medications doctors were able to prescribe, Taiwo’s personality still bloomed. We were convinced that she was a warrior.
On September 7th, 2013, I received a call from my older sister asking me to come home because Taiwo wasn’t doing too well. Later that night, my twin sister took her last breath at 11:20 PM. I will always remain thankful that Taiwo waited for me to return home in order for us to say our final good-byes. She fought for nearly 2 years and did not lose the fight as her spirit will continue to live on.

My family and I are determined to keep Taiwo’s love for service and commitment to education alive, and we need your support. For this reason, we began to raise funds for college scholarships to honor her memory. Your generous contributions will be vital in assisting college students in pursuing their education. 100% of funds received through this campaign will go towards student scholarships at Indiana University-Bloomington and will be disbursed during the 2018-2019 academic year.
We have set a goal of $5,000 because this year marks 5 years since Taiwo’s passing. This scholarship will provide 2 recipients with interests in law and public affairs a scholarship of $2,500 that will aid in cost towards tuition, room/board, books, and living expenses. The 2 recipients will be determined by a committee of faculty at Indiana University.
I will be certain to maintain updates on this page when a recipient has been selected.
