Hello there!
I have been a nurse, a healer for 36 years with the last 20+ years dedicated to working in various management and leadership positions however; I knew in my heart I would eventually return to direct patient care in a hospice setting. I used to say "I will be a hospice nurse when I grow up!" Well...guess what, I finally grew up!
One year ago, I took the plunge to work as an RN at a hospice residence and I count my blessings everyday! Recently, I also returned to school and obtained by BSN then obtained my CHPN (Certificate in Hospice and Palliative Care Nursing). I continue to learn from my patients and colleagues everyday.
The population I work with is culturally and religiously diverse- our patients are Hispanic, Caribbean, Asian, African-American or are Jewish from the Jewish Orthodox, Conservative or Reform communities -- and the majority of our patients are the poorest of poor. Our patients are typically without family support or their families are not able to manage care at home, are homeless and/or from dysfunctional family systems. Everyday I am impressed and humbled by these care providers, my co-workers who become our patients' surrogate family and work extremely hard to provide comfort to them on their final journeys.
This book is about these staff members -- the forgotten faces who work with the terminally ill who provide compassionate end of life care to this very diverse and deserving population on their final journeys. Our various staff members reflect the cultural richness of our patients -- while providing culturally competent care! Their stories are priceless and I am confident that you will enjoy getting to know them through their interviews in this book!
As one can imagine, publishing a book comes with expenses therefore I am asking for your support to reach my goal of $2500 to offset my start-up fees. Remember, no amount is too little.
