I am raising money to purchase school supplies for two schools in the Binghamton area that were affected by the disastrous flood of 2011.

Last fall, I was a Junior at Binghamton University when Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee hit the greater Binghamton area. I witnessed the torrential flooding that ensued, spoke with local townspeople who had lost their homes and all their valuables, and read about a local school that had been completely flooded: Owego Elementary. 

ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS

Owego Elementary had three feet of flooding, lost all of its school supplies, and its students and faculty were displaced to three interim school sites, far from their original school. 

Johnson City Primary School, which is already in an underfunded school district, had many of its students displaced from their homes as a result of the flood and who now struggle to afford school supplies.

I wanted to do my part to help these schools and schoolchildren recover from this terrible flood.

 

So, I applied for and received a Harpur Fellows grant, given by Binghamton University's Harpur College. This grant is enabling me to spend 5 weeks in Binghamton, until June 26th, raising money for much-needed school supplies for Owego Elementary School and Johnson City Primary School. I am raising money through the online donation platform www.ClassWish.org, and have started travelling around the Binghamton area speaking to community organizations, civic groups, religious organizations, businesses, and as many people as I can reach about my fundraising drive.

100% of received donations will be used to purchase paintbrushes, notebooks, music stands, loose-leaf, books for the libraries, expo markers, and the other vital school supplies on Owego and Johnson City teachers' Wish Lists:
