Hurricane Harvey.. 10 days ago today it was "just" another hurricane headed to the Texas coast. Being born and raised in Houston we have done it many times before and didn't think this time would be any different. We all prepared and kept on with our daily lives. We couldn't have ever prepared for how different and forever life changing this time would really be.
This will be a long road to recovery. Many people have already had the water recede from their homes and have been able to start the recovery and rebuild. We are thankful for that. Certain sections of Houston are not as lucky..
Most importantly, Our parents and their neighbors are safe after being water rescued out of their neighborhood in West Houston. Fleetwood, which is located right next to the Barker Reservoir, currently has flood water still flowing into the neighborhood. They have 5-6ft in the houses already and we were told that this was going to continue for the next 10-14 days. With mold forming in the first 24 hours, imagine the disaster these houses will be in after water sits 5 feet high in them for a month. There is a high probablilty that they won't ever be habitable again. Insurance adjusters can't get into the neighborhood to even access the damage until the water recedes.
Just imagine being displaced and losing absolutely everything that you have always taken for granted.. your clothes, your bed, your pictures, your car and most of all your house. It's unfathomable.
We want to start a fund to help buy supplies, clothes and help replace some of these items for our parents and a portion to help a few of their close neighbors. Our parents did not want us to do this but we are hopeful it will help ease their minds a bit. The money raised will go into an account that will be given to them to purchase what they need. Any amount will help! Thank you!!
