Supporting Jia and his family

Donation protected
Jia is a former Courserian and close friend to many of us.  Recently, he has had to endure one of the hardest moments any of us could imagine when his mom suffered a massive stroke, caused by a sudden, unexpected brain hemorrhage.  With such a traumatic injury, it's unclear that Jia's mom will ever recover again.

Jia's stepdad, Andy, has been a huge presence and help throughout this process, but medical bills, most staggeringly high, are mounting. Big questions remain, such as how to transport Jia's mom back home, how much it'll cost to take care of her, and how any of this will be affordable.

This fund is created to help Jia's family financially through this time. Specifically, we're raising funds to help support Jia's family to bring his mom back from the hospital and to set up her up for care.

Jia has been a wonderful friend and colleague who really cared about others, and if you can, now is the time for us to return the love and support.

** More information on Jia's Mom, from Jia**

The thing is, if you knew my mom, you’d know how tough she is. She’s never really learned how to give up or take “no” for an answer. When she was a kid, while other kids would be playing, she’d be studying and working non-stop. When she was sent to the countryside for “re-eduction” by the government, she picked up a near fatal infection in the poor living conditions, but she survived. When the country re-opened its schools, she placed into one of the best universities in the country and met my dad. When the country re-opened its borders, she got a fellowship to study abroad and took it, despite the pressure to stay in China and give up her career to raise a family. When her marriage with my dad fell apart, she started over, dating for the first time in 20+ years, and eventually married Andy, a man who’s faithfully supported her for the past 17 years. When she was laid off after the dotcom crash, she pivoted her career, pursuing a career in accountancy and, after years of studying and working, finally became a CPA this past summer and was getting ready for a new job - at age 60.

So, if there’s anyone that could pull through this, it’d be my mom. Still, my heart aches every time I see her tubed up in her hospital bed, or imagine the pain and fear she must’ve felt in those final moments. But I also know that she wouldn’t want us wallowing in despair on account of her. She wouldn’t ever give up on me and I'm not going to give up on her - I’m choosing to be hopeful and to do whatever I can to help her recover.
