<div>So many of us live our lives without much preparation. We need no physical assistance getting up in the morning, and we often eat and drive at the same time as we rush off to work. Thousands of individuals will not be able to get out of bed without assistance today, or drive themselves to work or the store, or even earn an education in a field of interest to them. Why? Because society isn't designed to include people irrespective of their lot in life. The disability community is the largest minority group in America.  Whether you're born with a disability, have an accident or illness, or simply grow older with new aches, one of these areas will touch your life or someone you love during your lifetime. So often, society tries to sell us on the future of technology as the answer to challenges, but in truth, many of these new toys are designed by people that do not have a disability and the cost is more than prohibitive for the average person.  Just as we live in harmony with other living, breathing things, so should we with people regardless of their disability.  It should be considered a social responsibility in which all people can be supported to live independent and full lives.   When we see it as a human responsibility it becomes easier to recognize and address challenges that all people–including those with disabilities–experience.

CBFL provides resources to help gain employable skills, master financial planning, use assistive technology, acquire durable medical equipment, find accessible housing and more. As a nonprofit, Coalition for Barrier Free Living has been serving Texans since 1978, advocating for rights, equality, and equity.  We've come a long way, but there's so much more to be done.
