Support for the family of Scottie Estep

Scottie Estep is a loving and hard-working father and husband. He is a 40 year old former coal miner that is now suffering from complete liver failure, and the prognosis is dire.

After 12 years of working in the coal industry, Scottie was laid off in July of 2013, due to the economy and the on-going "war on coal". Three months later, October 2013, he was diagnosed with complete liver failure. After multiple tests to-date, with more needed, there has been no diagnosed cause of his complete liver failure and his health continues to deteriorate. Scottie has now lost 98 lbs. Because the company he worked for had less than 25 employees, he also is not eligible for COBRA and lost his medical insurance with the lay-off!

Scottie is currently in need of an endoscopy, but cannot get this valuable test without insurance, or the funds to do so. Scottie was advised that with a diagnosis of complete liver failure, he does qualify for a liver transplant; however, he will not be put on the "list" without insurance, even with a MELD score of 20. Neither the University of Virginia Hospital nor Vanderbilt will put Scottie on the transplant list until he has insurance.

Scottie has two young sons that are 10 and 11 years old, and neither child has a true understanding of how seriously ill their father is.

With prescription expenses totaling $600.00 per month, and hospital and diagnostic testing totaling over $35,000 to date, this family is suffering financial ruin. With no existing insurance, and a pre-existing condition, Scottie has no way of getting health insurance until January 2014, when the ACA is implemented (if then!). Though the family meets the income guidelines for Medicaid, the State of Tennessee is no longer signing up any adults, except for pregnancy, on the state's current Medicaid Plan. Scottie's doctor has even written a letter to the State of TN explaining that denial of medical coverage is detrimental to his health. He is still being denied!

Every avenue has been researched to ensure that Scottie gets the medical care he needs; however, he has fallen through the insurance crack and cannot move forward with required testing and a liver transplant until the ACA kicks in. Scotties family is paying for doctor's visits and medications out of pocket, as best they can. Scottie's family maybe in jeopardy of losing their home, and his children will have to leave the school system they have been in for many years. Scottie's wife is trying to hold it together for her family!

Please consider making a contribution to help Scottie Estep and his family during this very dire medical crisis. It would be greatly appreciated by Scottie and his family. Thank you and God Bless!
