As some of you may know, Amanda has been closely monitored by healthcare professionals for many years because she is considered at high-risk for developing breast cancer due to her personal health and family history.
Amanda was recently diagnosed with LCIS, lobular carcinoma in situ, which puts her at significantly higher risk of developing invasive breast cancer because of the potential for the abnormal cells to spread to other tissues. LCIS does not always cause cancer. However, in Amanda’s particular case, the abnormal cells are so pervasive that they are too difficult to effectively monitor or treat. As a result, Amanda's doctors have urged her to undergo immediate surgery to prevent cancer.
With guidance from trusted medical professionals, family and friends, Amanda has made the difficult decision to undergo a prophylactic double mastectomy and reconstructive breast surgery to do just that. Amanda's surgery is scheduled for late March.
We are developing this fundraiser to support Amanda and her family during and after surgery. For those of you who know her, Amanda lives her life selflessly supporting others - in her career as a social worker, her devotion to her young children and husband, and with the care and love she gives to her family and friends. And who can forget the sense of humor she infuses into even the most trying of times! Now it’s our turn to take the supporting role.
It is anticipated that Amanda will be out of work for at least 8 weeks for recovery, the majority of which will be unpaid leave. While some of the medical expense will be covered by health insurance, there will still be significant out-of-pocket healthcare costs, as well as added expenses for child care, home health-aide, and daily life expenses.
Whatever contribution you can make will go far to help alleviate the emotional and financial burdens Amanda and her family face in the coming months. No amount is too small. You can also post your well wishes for Amanda here and count on updates about Amanda's spirits and recovery.
