Help me volunteer in Rwanda

Donation protected
Hello everyone, my name is Clinton Green and I need your help! I am a first-year law student at Osgoode Hall in Toronto, Canada and I am passionate about issues that affect international communities. As a result, I applied and have been selected for an amazing opportunity as a 2013 Osgoode International Legal Partnership (ILP) Fellow to work in Rwanda with the Ministry of Justice (MINIJUST).

My interest in Rwanda dates back to my undergraduate studies where I took a course that dealt with sociological understandings of genocides. In addition to other countries, we studied the genocide in Rwanda and I was touched by the social constructed difference between Hutus and Tutsis. The country has experienced incredible social and economic development since the 1994 tragedy and I am excited to play any role in the understanding and furtherance of this progress.

I will be volunteering my legal knowledge and research skills for a period of 11 weeks and the major aim for this research is to develop a law-based understanding of the social and economic growth Rwanda has experienced in recent years. As a research Fellow, my focus will be on issues such as transparency, anti-corruption, and analyzing the role of MINJUST within Rwanda's development. During my time with MINIJUST, I will rotate between the Legislative Drafting Services (LEG) and the Community Programs, Human Rights, and Legal Aid Services (CPHRLAS). This rotation will help me to develop academic experiences and also an ability to apply the law to real cases in order to help members of the Rwandan community.

So I have told you about this amazing opportunity - Why do I need your help?

The fellowships are largely self-funded and I have started this fundraising initiative because I need your help in financing this project. Below is a breakdown of my intended budget "“ based on my research of cost of living in Kigali, and the out of pocket costs already incurred.

Flight and other travel costs: $2000
Insurance: $300
Visa: $100
Rent: $1200
Food: $450
Miscellaneous: $1000
Total: $5050

While my budget is $5050.00, I hope to raise $3000.00 through fundraising. This is due to the fact that I will have some financial support from ILP and York University, in addition to my savings . I am greatly appreciative of any financial support, or otherwise, that you may be able to lend in helping me reach my goal. I look forward to making a difference in the international community through my work with MINIJUST and intend to maintain a level of accountability to my donators by operating a blog documenting my experiences and challenges.

Thank you so much for taking the time out to read about this initiative, I appreciate it. Please share this webpage with your friends. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me via Facebook or e-mail: [email redacted].
