Support Entoto Help Ethiopian Women Thrive in Tech

Donation protected
Growing up in Ethiopia, where there is a cultural bias against women in technology & entrepreneurship, Wongi, founder of Entoto, had limited career options. As a result, she never considered computer science until she received a full scholarship from the University of British Columbia (UBC) to explore her interest in technology. Now in her final year studying Mathematical Science— a combined major in Computer Science, Statistics and Math, she founded Entoto to empower Ethiopian women and give them a more accessible opportunity to pursue career in tech.

Although Ethiopia has more women than men, women account for only 10% of the science and technology field. This year, only 4 women in a class of 125 students graduated from Software Engineering at the Addis Ababa University. Entoto Fellowship is designed to address this problem by training women to produce tech solutions suited for Ethiopia’s economic system.

We are a diverse group of young women who are running Entoto under the Ethiopian Community Association (ECA), BC, Canada and are partnering with University of British Columbia and Addis Ababa Institute of Technology, Ethiopia. The Entoto Fellowship Program is a 12-week software development & entrepreneurship program for 20-25 women in Ethiopia. Students will be taught by experienced software developers & entrepreneurs based in Ethiopia, Canada and America.

Knowing the financial burden that prevents women from attending the program, we will be fully sponsoring all participants. We have successfully secured the accommodation, venue and food for participants in cash & kind, but still need to obtain laptops suitable for programming. Your contributions will help purchase up to 25 refurbished and new laptops. The students could greatly benefit from receiving laptops to not only fully immerse themselves in the program, but continue their learning and development once they complete the program. This funding is crucial to providing technological skills for the women in Ethiopia and  the success of The Entoto Fellowship. As well as cash donations, we would greatly appreciate laptops in good condition.

Your generous contribution will help begin our journey of creating a platform for women to use technology in order to create innovative & sustainable solutions suited for Africa’s unique challenges.
