Support the 2015-2016 Boise High Sustainability Summit!

What is the Sustainability Summit?
At Boise High, we believe in our students and their capacity to ignite social change in our communities.  Our Summits are our way of honoring our students’ passion, intelligence and leadership, by facilitating a students-teaching-students model on a selected theme.  The 2016 Sustainability Summit (Friday, April 8, 2016) will feature between 50-60 student presentations on topics related to sustainability.  In addition, the Sustainability Summit will feature a Keynote Speaker- an adult presenter who will excited our students about sustainability- and an interactive, hands-on portion of the day, featuring opportunities to contribute to our school garden, interact with installation art pieces made by students, and a maker-space where students can learn to create their own products, and more.

How does Boise High foster a successful Summit?
We start by believing in our students and staff!  This year, we used a “Big Read” model to prompt cross-curricular, campus-wide discussion of our theme.  After securing grant money to purchase a copy of Edward Hume’s non-fiction book Garbology for every student and staff member, we hosted a staff book-study early in the school year to cultivate engaging units and lessons related to the book.  (See our website below for some of these teacher unit and lesson plans.)  Then, we empowered our students through project-based, inquiry driven learning models across grade levels and disciplines.  By giving students and staff a common source (Garbology) and a common goal (the Summit) on a relevant topic (Sustainability), Boise High has already been transformed by our students engagement.  Midway through the year, we have revamped our recycling program, reduced our trash output, started a composting component in the cafeteria, reduced our energy usage by lowering lighting levels to a more natural wattage, engaged students in hands-on research doing waste audits and measurements, and more.  This is all before the Sustainability Summit!

How can you be a part of the movement?
Be a sponsor!  By donating here, you will help us to pay for a Keynote Speaker for our Sustainability Summit. We have contacted TWO possible speakers who are featured in Garbology who are willing and available to be our keynote speaker- provided we can pay for travel, accomodations and donation/fee.

If we fall short of our goal (or exceed it!), we will use money from this campaign to support student-led sustainability projects at Boise High.  Either way, it's a win-win!  And either way, our students are excited and empowered to be the change they want to see in their community!
