Sugarfoot Farm Rescue is located in Columbia, KY on 120 acres. We take in dogs that are strays and owner surrenders as well as dogs from shelters that are unadoptable for various reasons - too old, bonded pair, food or dog aggressive, We do not euthanize unless for sickness. If a dog is a probl it may be segregated from the rest but we don't euthanize even the worst problem dog.
We are unique in that our dogs are not in runs or tied. They live together in our fenced in area, some out in the barnyard, and they are allowed in the house - upstairs and down - they choose where they want to live. It's a lot like kids on a playground. The dogs bond together into groups. Yes, there are bullies, but the less aggressive dogs stick together and avoid them. The dogs have a play area with a fort, a slide, and even a wading pool or two. They are never left alone. There is always someone here. Visitors are welcome and everyone that has been here comments on how clean our grounds are and that all the dogs are well fed and healthy.
Our problem is our excellent reputation. People from all over have heard about us and often contact us with strays and owner surrenders. This past two months have been overwhelming. We have gotten in litters of puppies, pregnant dogs, and strays found dumped by the side of the road.
Before a dog is available for adoption they are vetted, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. This is costly for us but we want to make sure adopters get a healthy dog and that the dog finds a permanent home. We will not adopt a dog out that won't be part of the family. If you plan on getting a dog to leave tied or penned in the yard don't come here.
Our vet bills these past months have been more than usual. We had 2 puppies with Parvo. Unfortunately they both died, but the vet care was close to $1,000. So any puppies we've gotten in since then have gone to foster care. Prevention is expensive. Before any pups leave they each have 2 rounds of Parvo vaccines and are wormed every two weeks.
This week one puppy has been very sick. We took her to the vet on Saturday night. She received a blood transfusion, several shots, and the vet didn't expect her to make it through the night. She is still fighting for her life and it's been touch and go - but we won't give up as long as she's still determined to live.
Then to make matters worse my computer was having problems and the repairman said it has died. Almost all of my files have been lost and now I need another computer.
I don't like to ask for money but it has to be done. It's physically and emotionally hard to do this but without the funding it will be even harder. Add to the medical expenses the cost of dog food. We feed over 100 pounds a day.
So I'm asking you for your help. Any amount you can spare will be appreciated. Plus you can sign up for Amazon Smile to help as well as donate items for our booth at the Peddlers Mall in Campbellsville. They are additional ways to help us earn money.
This will mean so much for us as well as the dogs that live here looking for a new home and enjoying life while they're waiting for someone to love them.
