Steven's new Buddy

Hello, I am Jonee Casey and I am Steven Rasco's Grandmother. Steven was diagnosed with with Type 1 Diabetes in September of 2012 at the age of 15 months. Since his diagnosis many new changes have become necessary to our family.  We have learned and are still learning about Type 1 diabetes and want to help Steven have the best life he can. Because he is so little he can not tell us when he feels that his sugars are going up or down so his mother and I stay on constant alert to try to catch any sign of changes in his behavior that would indicate there might be a problem, which can be terribly frustrating considering we are not sure what is normal behavior for his age and what is diabetes related. With in the last couple of months we have had Steven back in the hospital with dehydration because of one virus or the other. First it was the flu and now a new one has caused our trip back to the hospital. I did not mention that we actually live an hour and a half from the Children's Hospital and His Endocrinologist .  Since we left the hospital the last time on the 26th of January, we have experienced extreme lows 50 and below with not  a single warning.  His doctor actually mentioned having him airlifted to Children's hospital because he was considered to be at a critical point.   My Daughter Jenifer is a wonderful mom but she has her hands full trying to provide for not only Steven but his 7 year old sister Leighanne. I help as much as I possibly can but can not be with her all the time. With Steven being only 20 months old now we don't  dare try to put him in a day care. So Jenifer is limited to the hours she can work her job.  Jenifer has and will continue to check blood sugars around the clock every two hours until he is out of honeymoon (honeymoon is the period shortly after diagnosis where the pancreas shuts down completely and can no longer produce insulin making him totally dependent on insulin injections, we are up to 5 to 6 shots a day right now) and then we will still check him at 2 am overnight for years to come. We discovered D.A.D.( Diabetes Alert Dog) and think that with him so little that this would be a wonderful asset to his family  A specially trained dog can assist Jenifer to care for Steven's diabetes.  Our major problem is that neither she nor I can afford the funds to purchase the dog that can possibly prevent a critical high or low blood sugar that could cause a seizure or even his death.  We would like to ask for your help with the funding of a new buddy for Steven. To even begin the process we have to raise $500.00 and the remainder of the money is to complete his purchase and to bring the dog home to live with Steven, Jenifer and Leighanne.  It is our understanding that the dog is going to be about 8 months old when we receive him and he could grow with Steven and help to protect him from having these unannounced highs and lows with his blood sugar. Please join with us in getting our sweet baby Steven a Buddy.
