The Mitchell Family

Donation protected
Please consider donating to support Steve and Renee (Perry) Mitchell as they battle with Pancreatic Cancer.

Steve started chemotherapy treatments in November 2014 and has overcome quite a few obstacles along the way, including multiple hospital stays due to dehydration and pulmonary embolisms, to name a few.

After a blessed remission from April 2015 to June 2016, the cancer returned in a single retro-caval lymph node near his spine. This was successfully treated with radiation in the summer of 2016. Multiple lesions then stubbornly reappeared throughout his lungs in the fall of 2016, prompting an additional 9 chemo treatments between October 2016 and July 2017. During that same time, Steve began to experience headaches and dizziness, which led to the discovery of a pea-sized tumor in his brain. A point of note: Up until that time, and in spite of the many previous chemotherapy treatments, Steve maintained a head full of hair. Unfortunately, his hair lost the battle to a single dose of radiation, which apparently destroyed the tumor, as well.

As of the time of this writing, August 2017, the side effects of the treatments have begun to outweigh the benefits, and Steve and Renée have made the difficult decision to stop further treatments at this time.

Please support and lift up the Mitchells with a financial gift and your prayers! Any money received goes to help defray the mounting medical costs and other expenses, since Steve has been unable to work since October 2014.

Here is a brief summary of Steve’s story paraphrased from his Caringbridge entries in 2014. For more details about Steve’s story please visit and/or follow his Caringbridge page:

Steve Mitchell is a 49 year old husband and father of three girls, Kyra (23), Twyla (7) and Zoey (5). His wife is Renee (Perry) Mitchell.

They are a tight-knitted family, which has their hope and trust planted firmly in Jesus Christ.

On Friday, October 3, 2014 Steve’s doctor shared the results of his CT scan and his doctor told him something no one ever wants to hear.  “We got the CT scan results and they’re not good.”

Fast forward just a few short weeks to October 20th.  After two CT scans, a PET scan, multiple blood tests and urinalyses, and two biopsies the doctors had consulted one another and concluded that Steve has stage four pancreatic cancer and it is non-operable and incurable.

The only choice that Steve is given at this time is to undergo chemotherapy as a means to buy some time and hopefully shrink the tumors that exist in the pancreas, duodenum, liver, lung and several lymph nodes.

(Here is part of an entry written by Steve from October 20th after learning about his diagnosis):

“Who knew?! Well, the answer to that is, of course, God did. He wasn't broadsided by this. Neither did He design it. Remember when some religious folks brought a blind man to Jesus and asked, "Who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" Jesus said, "Neither. This happened so that the works of God could be displayed in him." And then Jesus healed him. [John 9] (paraphrased)”

“Will that happen in my case? I don't know. It could. We can pray and hope. Regardless, I am determined that God will be glorified in my life.”

“To be perfectly honest, this was the worst case scenario, a real life horror story, come true. And I am not shaken. The only explanation I can fathom for the peace I have is that God is with me. That's cool.”

“I'm sorry that I was not able to contact each of you individually with this information, rather than revealing it in a public forum such as this. But, after all, that's what this site is for.”

“So what next?”

“I'm not done. I'm not punching any clocks. I'm not checking out. I'm going to fight this with all I've got. Yes, it will be the fight of my life (literally). But I have lots to live for and plenty of incentives.”

“I know I am loved. I know I am supported. I know the One to Whom I belong. I am not shaken.”

“Please continue to pray for a complete miracle. Please pray for my family. Please continue to pray for Twyla, especially."

“Your prayers are effective. We can feel it! We know God is hearing each one and answering them all.”

“So let's join together as a team, a unit, a body, and kick this thing in the teeth. While you're at it, please pray for others you may know that are struggling with problems or illnesses. Don't make this just about me. Let's just keep praying and watch what God will do!!”

All my love,

Steve
