Hi, my name is Blanca. I am a 23-year-old mother and wife. I have two young boys, and my family is everything to me. I have been fighting an eye disease for the last 10 years.
When I was 12 years old I was diagnosed with an eye disease called Stargardt. It is an inherited form of juvenile macular degeneration that causes progressive vision loss usually to the point of legal blindness (where I am now). I was told I would never be able to drive and in 2010 it became too difficult for me to work. Until now there was no cure or treatment.
Thankfully, there are doctors who work very hard to try and find a cure or treatment for this disease. Dr. Steven Levy of MD Stem Cells is one of them. He has dedicated his life to researching stem cells and how they can improve vision loss in the eye. What he does is take bone marrow stem cells and inject them directly into the infected area of the eye. Because the treatment is still in clinical trials, it is not covered by insurance. The surgery cost $21,600 and will take place in Florida.
Because the surgery is a clinical trial there is no guarantee that it will work. However, Dr. Levy and I both have faith in the prospect that it may. Honestly, if it didn’t work I would be devastated. But I will always remain hopeful that doctors like Dr. Levy will continue to work hard to one day create a successful treatment for vision loss, and I will feel proud that I participated in the process of finding a cure.
If the surgery does work, I would be beyond grateful to all of you who chose to support me. To have my vision back would be a dream come true. Besides the important things like being able to see my children grow up and maybe getting my license, it will be the little things that change my life. Being able to see the color of my boys’ eyes, being able to read a book without getting frustrated and tired, and most important being independent!
What if I surpass my goal? The truth is I haven’t asked for anything more than the cost of the surgery. That said, if I surpass my goal, I will use the extra money to help offset travel costs for getting to Florida (where the treatment takes place). However, anything beyond travel costs, I will use to assist a local foundation in Cleveland called the Cleveland Sight Center. I would love to give any extra money and my time so the center may help others like myself.
