Stand by Ed

About 3 years ago I received news that CANCER struck a close family member, Edward Wong;  I was heartbroken over the news as he is like a brother to me. The tumor in his colon was malignant, so he was faced with chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation.  Ed was younger and thus stronger than the average colon cancer patient, but that year it was a tough Thanksgiving and Christmas for his wife and my cousin, Helen, and their son, Logan. It was hard to see my tattooed tough-guy Ed go through the physical changes of battling cancer.  It brought tears to my eyes hearing about Logan, still less than 3 years old at the time, struggle to understand why his normally hands-on Dad couldn’t wrestle and play with him the way he usually did. My heart hurt over how both Helen and Ed put their lives on hold as they struggled with medical costs along with other living expenses and afford daycare in New York City.

Ed was determined, though, to not let cancer completely take over. He continued to socialize with friends, work to provide for his family, be a supportive husband and loving father.  Fast forward to 2018, the cancer continued to spread but Ed still felt strong and after a fight for insurance approval, he started immunotherapy. Unfortunately, it didn’t give the results they had hoped. About 3 weeks ago, after coming home from work Helen found Ed so disoriented and in so much pain, they made a trip to the ER which resulted in him being admitted to the ICU and being intubated (needing machines to help him breath). Now, Ed is off intubation, but he is severely weakened and with Stage 4 cancer doctors say he is in no shape to receive chemo or any other cancer therapies. My heart breaks for this family when I hear that chances are low that Ed will return home.

Cancer does not  discriminate and affects not just the individual. I cannot imagine not having the daily support of my husband, having to explain to my child why dad is sick and not around, or having to tell my in-laws about their son. I cannot imagine leaving my husband’s bedside and having to be at work the next day after being at the hospital until 2am.  Please consider making a donation to support this family. It won’t beat Ed’s cancer and may not bring Logan’s dad home for the holidays, but it can help with the medical bills and living expenses that disability doesn’t cover. No donation is too small, and greatly appreciated. Please pray and send positive vibes, also if you could share this GoFundMe to your social media. Thank you.
