Dear Friend,

The friends of Ian St. Bernard are uniting to raise money to defray the cost of his situational and incidental bills associated with his medical condition.  Please lend your support!

Ian St. Bernard, affectionately known as St. B, is gravely ill.

In August 2014, St B left Grenada for New York to obtain a second medical opinion because he was diagnosed with complications from liver disease.  Today, his condition remains serious and complicated as he is expected to be in and out of hospital in New York for at least the next six months. He has to undergo weekly tests and in his current condition, he is prone to infections. As if the overwhelming fight to overcome this challenge was not difficult enough to deal with, Ian is also suffering from severe depression due to devastating personal tragedies.

St B’s medical complications have a long history going back some 31 years.  He, like most Grenadians who were traumatized by the events of October 1983, never sought or was granted any trauma counseling.  Unbeknown to many people, his family and close friends included, St B began to suffer from depression.  And the month of October has always been the most stressful and tormenting for him.

Following October 1983, it took several years for St B to find productive employment and provide for his young family, until a family friend and community neighbor came to the rescue and offered him an opportunity to sell life insurance at his company.

More recently and specifically since 2011, St B experienced some devastating personal tragedies and economic hardships, in part due to the crippling economic situation gripping the insurance industry in Grenada.  Beginning in May 2011, Ian lost his daughter-in-law, Shion and her baby.  Shortly thereafter, his eldest brother, Lenox died.  To further complicate matters, in November of 2012, within the period of 12 days, St B lost both his mother and another brother.  These deaths weighed heavily on St B.

Ansha, St B’s wife of 32 years, had to take a leave of absence from her job in Grenada, at no pay, to be at his side.  She decided that it was the best way to provide loving support as Ian fights to overcome his challenge.

There have been unexpected and significant expenses associated with Ian's treatment and care.  As a result, Ian's family is faced with a relentless financial burden and finding it extremely difficult to meet current and ongoing expenses.

That is why we (Ian’s friends in NY) have decided to come together to support Ian and his family to continue the fight to help him overcome this challenging period.

Already, St B’s colleagues and friends in Grenada have gone ahead and started a fundraising campaign to assist our brother and friend.  They have set up a bank account at the Grenada Cooperative Bank: "Ian St. Bernard Medical Assistance Fund", Account number 111000903.  The trustees for that Account are Leon Cornwall, Christopher Stroude, and Richard McPhail.

Friends and colleagues in New York are joining this fundraising campaign to lend a helping hand to our friend and his family who need our support right now.

For those of us who know Ian well, we know him as a caring, outgoing, generous, principled person, who is always ready to go the extra mile for his friends.  It is only fitting for us to do all we can to assist our friend, brother and comrade in his time of need.

We launch this campaign to help a friend who needs our help urgently. We are kindly appealing to you to join us in this fundraising effort and give your fullest support by contributing generously.

If you would like to make a direct deposit or wire transfer to the Grenada account or mail a check instead of an online donation (that way we can avoid fees on donations), please email us at [email redacted] for mailing information or you can click the "contact" link with the email image toward the bottom of the page or the right of the page.

Let us all do our very best at this time to assist our comrade, friend and brother and his family.  Every financial contribution is welcome. No donation is too small.

Thank you and best wishes to you and your family!

Love and blessings always!
