Wolfie's Dream - Scripps Nat'l Spelling Bee 2019

Donation protected
Wolfgang Schaff is a hopeful speller in the 2019 Scripps National Spelling Bee.  He competed last year and, at the age of only 10, spelled all of his words correctly on stage.  He tied for 42nd place.  Wolfie’s dream is to return to the Scripps National Spelling Bee through a program that Scripps initiated last year called RSVBee.  The program allows unsponsored spellers like him to participate in the bee, except the cost of journey is entirely borne by the speller’s family.  Unfortunately, we lost our home when our city’s sewage system backed up into our home and our insurance company decided to fight our claim instead of pay it.  Given the financial stress of fighting our insurance company and paying for a home we cannot live in, we decided to set up a fundraising event for Wolfgang’s spelling bee journey.  Thank you very much for your support of Wolfie’s spelling bee dream.

Wolfgang wrote a heartfelt message:

"Hi, everybody!  My name is Wolfgang.  I competed in the Bee last year and did pretty well.  My sister competed in the Bee a couple of times, too.  She was even a finalist in 2017.  I love the Bee so much!  I want to go back to the Bee, but since my home was destroyed in a flood, I don’t have a home or a local bee.  Fortunately though, the Bee has a program called RSVBee that allows people like me to compete, but it costs a lot of money.  Can you save my dream?  Thank you!  Wolfie"

Spellers who are sponsored by their home areas do not have to bear the costs of the journey, as the sponsor pays for the participation fee, hotel, and transportation cost (for at least 2) and usually also provides a stipend to cover additional expenses.

Wolfgang’s funding goal includes the fees required by Scripps, such as $1,500 for the participation fee and $2,500 for the hotel chosen by Scripps, as well as the cost of tickets ($100 each) for the Kickoff Party and Final Banquet.  Part of the transportation costs are also included.  The costs for the journey (est. $9,000) exceed the goal amount ($6,000), but we limited what we set for the goal.  (We were apprehensive about establishing a funding page at all.)

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me, Wolfie’s mom.  I’ll be the one paying the expenses and withdrawing any funds contributed on his behalf.

We are truly grateful for your consideration in helping Wolfgang fund his dream trip to the Bee.

Appreciatively yours,

Michele Schaff
