South Pond Chapel Improvements

Donation protected

Hello, my name is Eleanor Gubbins, and I am fifteen years old. South Pond Chapel was built in 1870, and every summer Sunday night, there would be Hymn Sings held at the chapel. The Hymn Sings have been held there forever, but I remember going when I was barely in kindergarten. As I grew older, I had started getting more involved in the church and started going to Hymn Sings more often. Due to past years winter storms, the chapel had a lot of damage done. The roof was replaced in 2016, but further repairs needed to be done inside.

This past summer, my mother and I were driving down Long Pond Road, and I asked her when the repairs were to be completed. She devastatingly told me that she did not think there were any repairs scheduled for the chapel. Hearing this news broke my heart. I had missed being in that small chapel on summer nights singing the old hymns that I had grown up knowing and loving. I decided, if no one was going to make plans to fix the chapel, I would!

I spoke to my friend Jessiah Swales, and we came up with a plan to present to the Council of Ministries at the First Baptist Church of Plymouth, the owners of South Pond Chapel. They accepted our ideas, and I am on the quest to complete the chapel. The ultimate goal is to have the chapel reopened for the 2018 Hymn Sing season.

In order to reach this goal, we need to raise funds and are looking for volunteers willing to help out. Electrical wires need to be checked. A portion of the ceiling needs to be replaced. Part of the flashing near the chimney needs to be fixed. Repairs to the altar and windows need to be completed, in addition to other minor repairs. We would also like to install a ductless heating and cooling system. There is a chance that there is a small amount of mold in the chapel. We are still researching this aspect and how to properly approach it. 100% of all funds raised will be going directly to South Pond Chapel.

Overall, we want to be able to praise and worship God in the small chapel that is conveniently located in that area of town. Anything truly helps, God bless!!
