It is with great pride and excitement that I inform you that the South Dade Theatre Magnet Program has been selected to represent the state of Florida in the one-act play competition at the National Thespian Festival.
The state festival is considered to be the largest festival on earth. Over seven thousand high school theatre students attended the state festival this year. Our school presented an original play entitled Amygdala, which had received straight superior ratings and won the "Best Actor Award" at the district theatre competition in October. After receiving praise for our work and straight superior ratings from our state judges, we received news about our astonishing accomplishment. This production has now won a total of six awards, including best play in Florida.
This is without question, one of the highest honors a high school theatre program can receive. Being chosen to represent your state at a National competition in any sport or event is a very prestigious honor. I am extremely proud of my students and I hope you are as well. At this event, we are not only competing, but students are going to be given a plethora of opportunities. Seniors will get to audition for college scholarships, juniors will audition for colleges from around the country, students will get to participate in professional theatre workshops, and students will get to see incredible main stage performances from around the country.
With the help from some of our community, friends and family, we have been able to fund our registration fee, which came out to a total of $24,217.00. Our registration included event costs, housing and meals for an entire week. The only thing we have left to fundraise for is our transportation. Due to the large cost, we are unable to fly to Nebraska. We will be taking a bus, which will be a total of $14,000. Our transportation is due to the school by June 11, 2014. Unfortunately, the time frame involved in getting these funds is ridiculously short and we are trying to do the best we can.
We need your help to realize these students' dreams. Our students are our future, and these students are truly deserving of this honor and this opportunity. What we would love is your support moving forward with our goals. We have reached out to large corporations, other celebrities and our community, but few have returned our emails and phone calls. If you could please forward this letter to anyone that you think can assist us in making these students' dreams come true. That would be incredible. We have not been given any opportunities to share our accomplishments with anyone that can truly give us the financial backing that we so desperately need.
