Songbird Rising Scholarship Program 2019

Dear Friend of Songbird Rising Suzuki School!

Thank you for your interest in bringing scholarships to students at UT Elementary School. Over the years many of you have participated in Songbird Rising String Camp or have shown interest in our summer program. We are proud to say that this summer will mark the third year of the Songbird Rising Scholarship Program and our ninth consecutive year of bringing a diverse string camp to young musicians!

We would like to make Songbird Rising String Camp available to ten deserving students who would not normally be able to pursue a summer music camp opportunity. We have chosen to partner with the UT elementary's Musical Lives program , this will mark our third year of partnership!

"Students who have attended the Songbird Rising Summer Camp in previous years have loved it! The opportunity to make new memories, learn new music, and meet new friends is invaluable." - Ms. Castañeda (UTES Orchestra Teacher).

Songbird Rising String Camp in a nutshell
Designed to present a unique opportunity for young string players in Austin TX, Songbird Rising String Camp utilizes a diverse approach and theme driven curriculum, along with Suzuki rooted teaching to support and evolve a foundation of joy, skill and creative self expression in music acknowledging the needs of the whole musician. A simply awesome Suzuki summer camp for Austin!

A typical day after arriving to camp will include a brief welcome, three group classes, two short breaks, an hour for lunch (with a playscape!) and any two of a masterclass, singing, yoga, guest workshop or art. Each day is completed with a round of student performances!

Who can come?
6 - 11 year old Violin, Viola, Cello and Bass players. We accommodate students who can play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star with Variations through to Suzuki book 4 students.

Diversity of activities
The camp offers a wide range of activities including group class, masterclass, singing, yoga, swimming, daily performance opportunities, improvisation, teachers corner, guest performances, workshops and the end-of-camp final performance.

Benefits we have seen in our students
● Increased stamina from playing 2-4 hours a day for two weeks
● Increased motivation for daily practice
● Improved technique
● Comfortability with trying new things
● Meeting others in the musical community

Musical Lives at UT Elementary
Musical Lives is a community program that aims to provide high quality musical experiences for children while developing a commitment to working in undeserved communities among Butler School undergraduate and graduate students.

Initiated by the Butler School of Music as an outreach program for children at UT Elementary School, a charter school in East Austin, it directly provides access to instrumental music in areas of the community where instruction is limited by economic constraints.

Musical Lives also creates an environment to train the education leaders of tomorrow. By utilizing the well established effectiveness of the Butler School’s String Project —a teacher development program—it serves as a living laboratory in which undergraduate and graduate students can refine their pedagogical skills as they experience the rewards in helping young children achieve meaningful goals.

In the fall of 2014, the program’s inaugural session began with the aspiration that it will expand to include children from a wider range of neighborhoods in Austin and the surrounding area.

Demographic
The schools current demographic is as follows, 87% ethnic minority with seventy percent of students qualifying for free and reduced lunch. Most of the students will be first-generation college students.

We thank you wholeheartedly for your support and are so excited to be able to make this camp accessible to UT Elementary students!

Sincerely,
Laura Poyzer
